Why am I so tired?

Over the last couple of weeks I have become extremely tired. I can't seem to get any energy to do anything apart the essential stuff. All I want to do is sleep!
Any ideas?

Get your thyroid checked ASAP!

Also have your blood count checked for your iron levels. Anaemia makes you very tired.

Pregnant?

<hijack> How's your job? Start a thread!

MummyJules Wed 10-Aug-05 13:47:50

Definetely not pregnant!!!!

I did have low iron levels about a year ago so it might be that. I kept on thinking it might be a bug but I really don't think so...
Will have to go to the doctor as this is driving me mad....There is so much housework but I just can't face it

I was knackered after I had ds, everyonne went 'its having a baby' or ' you must have pnd' turns out i had a severe overactive thyroid (underactive makes you tired too)

It's just blood tests

I was just thinking about starting a similar thread, my tiredness is starting to worry me...

what other symptons are there of an over active thyroid? I thought you lost a lot of weight?

MummyJules - are you sleeping a lot?

WigWamBam Wed 10-Aug-05 18:02:09

Symptoms of an underactive thyroid can be:

feeling tired and sleeping excessively
easily feeling the cold
dry and thickened skin
coarse, thinning hair and eyebrows and brittle nails
sore muscles, slow movements and weakness
depression and problems with memory and concentration
weight gain
constipation
fertility problems and increased risk of miscarriage
heavy, irregular or prolonged menstrual periods

Symptoms of an over-active thyroid can be:

feeling nervous, irritable or emotional
tremor (shaking)
sleeping poorly
being intolerant of heat and sweating more than usual
losing weight despite increased appetite (10% of people gain weight)
feeling tired and having weak muscles
increased heart rate or palpitations
having infrequent periods or problems with fertility
having more frequent bowl movements or diarrhoea
shortness of breath, especially when exercising
loss of hair or finer hair than usual
swelling of the thyroid gland in the neck - a goitre

MummyJules, might sound like the obvious but are you eating substantial food three times a day? I mean, no skipping meals. Do you drink enough fluids? These two factors alone can contribute to general fatigue and tiredness if you are not looking after yourself.

Nice explanation wigwamben. I think mine could be underactive as some symtoms match.

But my tiredness could be because ds wakes me up at night and during the day looking after two very young kids. Do you sleep well at night MummyJules?
