and does anyone know why I'm going to be having one under GA and not local?

that was quite amusing .. there were 4 options from the colposcopy going from

  1. it'll be nothing (as in smear was wrong)
  2. I might take a pin-prick biopsy
  3. I might be able to remove all the abnormal cells here and now under a local
  4. you may need to come back for a little operation

so he's 'down there' and holds up 4 fingers ... well it amused me anyway

I had a GA for a cone biopsy. I was told in advance that it was a tossup whether I'd need a GA or not, but apparently the troublesome cells were in a particularly far-distant corner of the cervix.
I love GAs anyway, and in this case I was especially glad to be out of it. Ah, the glorious relief when I woke up. I'd only been out for about 5 mins or so.

I had a loop diathermy a few months ago and it really was no where near as bad as I had imagined. I had a local into my cervix which I didn't even feel, then they attached a strange metal sticky patch to my leg (think they said something about "earthing" me as they were using electricity!) They put a camera in first and showed me my cervix on a big screen which was rather bizarre, but anyway, the loop thing was fine, just a bit of a burning smell. Afterwards had what felt like period pains for a few hours and bled (or rather produced what looked like soot) for a couple of weeks. Most annoying thing was I couldn't swim/BD for about 3 weeks.

I had one done under a general which was my choice as was freaking out in that chair so much he couldn't do it!! Anyway there were three others in the ward who had to have a general and this was just because the cells were tucked away and not so easily accessible. We all had our ops on a day case ward we were all fine and we all went home that evening! I only got mild period type pain and not much bleeding. Good luckxxx (imo a general is always better!!)

Hi Twiglett,
I had loop diathermy about 10 years ago and was sg myself. So I went to the doctors and he gave me some diazepam!! Not something I would usually take and he only gave me a prescription for 2 or 3 tablets...........enough to relax me so that I would lay still for the treatment. And the treatment was fine, injection a little uncomfortable and a bit of a funny smell as they did it (TMI???). That might be a better option for you rather than a GA.
Hope this helps

Twiglett
I just saw this!

No, you do NOT need a GA for this. Someone just doesn't want to be bothered with a patient who's awake.

No offense, but I just don't get that - giving people GAs for very minor procedures, but the reluctance to prescribe decent painkillers. Weird!

In fact, you don't even need a local for a colpo. Talk about removing a fly w/a sledgehammer!

I had it with a Valium.

In fact, it is routinely done in the US with nothing.

Now the LEEP is performed in the States under local. I won't lie, the local hurts - it's an injection. After that, though, no pain.

Personally, I avoid GA when possible, but it really is removing a fly w/a sledgehammer and completely unnecessary.

Cone biopsy, however, yes, the patient is usually offered the choice of GA or regional anethestic, as that involves dilating the cervix in order to get to the abnormal cells.

But c'mon! Anaethesia is so advanced these days! People don't need GAs for things like colpos, LEEPs, most dental work (had all wisdom teeth extracted by an oral surgeon under IV sedation, included one that had developed bone spurs on the jawbone).

Twiglett, is your doc a MNer? He said "number 4"... That would concern me a bit...! Did the glitter impress him?

Sorry - no experience of loop diathermy - not really sure why I'm posting except to be a trifle whimsical Had been thinking of you today!

Had colpo with a valium about an hour before and a dose of paractemol - DON'T take asprin or ibuprofen b/c they make you bleed more.

Had LEEP (loop electroexicion procedure - a laser, basically) with a valium an hour before. Didn't take paracetemol as had local anethetic injected into cervix.

Walked out of both procedures half an hour later w/no ill effects.

I had it done locally earlier in the year. I was REALLY nervous, but though obviously it wasn't a pleasant experience, it was over and done with quickly. I didn't like the burning smell, but it didn't hurt and the staff at the Colposcopy clinic were really nice. I had light bleeding for a couple of weeks afterwards, but no pain. Did end up taking antibiotics in case of an infection, which made me feel REALLY weird, but that was just because my bleeding didn't start til a few days in and GP prescibed them just in case when it did start.
