so sorry to hear that you have another worry to cope with. I have had an endoscopy, they offered me a mild anaesthetic which i didn't take because i had to go back to work. It was uncomfortable a bit, when they put the tube in and when they took it out, and your throat will be a bit sore. But not that bad. If you have any anaesthetic it will make you drowsy and you should not drive. Can somebody go with you? And maybe getting somebody to pick your dd from school is a good idea. do hope it all goes ok.

You want be admitted, but you shouldn't go on your own if you intend to drive afterwards as you may have had sedation

Amanda, I've had one too -it is uncomfortable when the probe goes in, not so bad when taken out, but I was surprised at how quick the procedure was.

Had my endoscopy almost three years ago but had been admitted for a battery of tests to see what was casing my pain (turned out be gallstones).

However I was knocked for mine and was very drowsy afterwards - so much so that I slept for almost 12 hours.

My throat was a bit sore afterwards and had a dry throat for a little while afterwards.

So if you are going under GA make sure you have someone with you.

My dad had one done a few years ago too but I picked him up - he was like someone who was very drunk afterwards.

Hi im an endoscopy nurse regarding having sedation i would definately say its a personal choice as every person is able to cope in varying amounts, if you do decide on sedation then you will definately need help for 24 hours following the procedure as it can stay in your sytem making you a little sleepy for a while. we advice 24 hours before driving ect. The trick to the test is concentrating on your breathing the test should take no longer than 5 minutes max it shouldnt be sore just a little uncomfortable due to the they will put in your stomach. hope this helps

Hi Amanda. I've had 2 endoscopies and it wouldn't bother me if I had to have another. I had sedation and all I can remember after that is being told to swallow. Apparently on the second one I was awake and watching what they were doing but I don't remember a thing. I was very sleepy afterwards.

Hi, I have been an endoscopy nurse and I'll endorse dianes post.
You could get very bored waiting, so bring a book. The lists are always jam-packed.
You will most likely be given the choice of having just throat spray or sedation. Noone can make that decision for you, it depends on you alone. Some people panic and become terrified, and some are unbelievably calm.
Relaxation is definately the key. Concentrate on your breathing, do not worry about the long black scope, close your eyes if you have to. The procedure is very quick and even quicker if you can relax. Good nurses will help you to relax 5 minutes, no more.
However, if you do want sedation. You still need to concentrate on your breathing, the only difference is the sedation will help you relax but IT WON'T KNOCK YOU OUT. Like alcohol, very frightened patients can still fight sedation!
You will need atleast an hour lying down to recover and someone else to pick dd up.
Most patients only experience mild discomfort, if that.
If it helps, if I had one I would say no to sedation everytime!! However, many of my colleagues would always want sedation. As I said, the choice is yours!
