I have a stomach bug and I also think I have broken my foot, can't walk, but can't go to A&E either, what can I do?

I feel so sorry for myself, I can't actually decide what's for the best.

Last night around midnight I accidentally dropped a big heavy glass from a cabinet straight onto my bare foot. The pain was unbelievable and I almost passed out (everything went like a negative, seating etc), but I am a lone parent and DD was in bed, so i didn't want to drag her up and go to A&E at that time.

It instantly turned purple, the whole top of my foot, 2 smallest toes went like sausages, can't walk on it.

So took pain killers and went to bed. Woke up at 5.30am with a horrible stomach bug, which went on until just after 10am.

I still feel awful, weak and sick and yuck, but my foot is unbelievably sore.

I don't know if i should wait for DD to get home at 3pm and risk going to A&E or wait and see how i feel tomorrow. I can't sleep with the pain, it's awful.

I feel really sorry for my self, pathetically so, but have you every tried to hope quickly to the bathroom when in the throws of a bug!

To make matters worse I am meant to be going on holiday on Friday

Go to A&E! Get a taxi and go. Is there someone who can look after your dd while you go on your own?

Do you not have a friend/neighbour who can have your dd? How old is she?

If it is broken you have to go to A and E and get it seen to/put in plaster so it heals properly/to prevent further damage.

Sorry you are having such a rough time.

I am quite scared about the stomach bug recurring either in the taxi or whilst waiting in the hospital. I know I couldn't hop far to a toilet! Should you even go into a hospital with a bug?

DD is 9. There is no one to sit with her when she gets in from school, but my mum said she could come up about 5.30 and sit with her then. Although I also thought maybe i could just take her with me at 3ish, although with that only being about 20 mins away I'm not sure I could manage yet

I could cope fine with either one at once, having both is killing me!!

Can you phone NHS direct and ask advice? They will prob say go to A and E though!

Are you still being sick?

Or if its the other end Immodium might help temporarily?

I'm sure they see lots of people with stomach bugs so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

It is rotten having both at once though.

Poor old you. You sound like you have the sort of luck I have!

Your foot deffo sounds bad I think, certainly needs a Doc.

Phone up a&e and explain the situation. They might be able to get you to a side room to wait with a bowl. other end is problematic though.

Poor you

If you are anything like me the trip to the hospital will be a miraculous cure for your stomach bug and you will feel surprisingly better just for being there..always happens to me when I am being seen by a doctor about anything.

Adrenaline will probably kick in and you will feel well enough to manage.

Good luck.

Maybe you are being sick because of the pain of your foot? Can that happen? Seems almost too coincidental. Agree with the other posts, phone NHS direct and get some advice.

Thanks everyone, I have just phoned NHS 24, but they didn't have any advice and said it would be up to 5 hours for someone to call back. They said as it was before 6pm to contact my own GP, but I know he will just say go straight to A&E.

It was mostly the other end rather than sickness. I had some diarrhea relief tablets, which I think are just unbranded immodium, but they said not to mix with anything containing codine, and I have been taking co-codamol for my foot because it is so painful, I know just ordinary paracetamol wouldn't help.

I might try phoning A&E say what they say.....I wish today was over!!!

Lol, fanjo, I do know what you mean, always works for DD too

It's not the pain making me ill, I was at a halloween party on Saturday and 10 people who were at it are no ill....DD is one of the few well people, so no doubt she will be next...gah!!!

I am pretty sure actual immodium (loperamide) +codeine is OK..maybe you could get some of that?

Report
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 02/11/2009 15:06

maybe I am wrong though, must stress am not a doctor!

If its not safe I have mixed them before without realising and been fine

Have just started with the diarrhea again so am not going to risk A&E am so scared of pooing myself because I can't walk

I have sent DD to get me coca cola because I'm sure I've heard if you let it go flat it can help, so I am currently letting it go flat, but it's not really happening!!

Will hopefully be able to get to A&E tomorrow!!

I'm hand washing and anti bacterial spraying everything in the hope of not spreading it to DD. Fingers crossed

you poor thing!

i recently broke my big toe, if its your toes that you think youve broken take comfort in the fact they dont pot them anyway - they bandage them tightly for support. is there anyone who could do that for you? just until you can get to A&E for an xray?

for the tummy bug id ring gp for advice. you could get a telephone consult, so no need to go to surgery (they wont want you there with that anyway!)

rest up and hope your feeling better soon.

I'm not sure if it is the 2 smallest toes of the bone that runs down from the little toe if you know what I mean.

I will look and see if I have any bandages, I had loads left from a recent operation, but I stupidly let DD and her friend play hospitals with what was left

Apart from the foot I feel a bit better, just really tired, so I think I will take painkillers and just go to bed when DD does! Can't come quick enough!!!

the codeine should be helping to slow down or stop the diahrea. immodium does nothing for me but i have prescribed codeine that i only take in emergencies and it works very well. try taking the maximum does of co-codomol until you get to A&E.

When I have a bug like this put a tiny amount of sugar in real coke (not diet coke) and stir - watch out for it fizzing up. Drink this to help rehydrate.
Hope you can get some help with your foot tomorrow, poor you.

How are you today?

Report
ElizabethWakefield · 03/11/2009 11:08

Thanks all.

I went to bed at 8 last night and slept until 8 this morning, but had to run to the toilet as soon as i woke up!!

After going back and forward by about half 9, I decided just to brave the hospital!

When I got to the hospital it was all police tapped up because (according to the taxi driver) there had been a murder outside it last night. So the place was pretty empty, so i was seen quite quickly.

Turns out i have a broken toe, but as it is only the little toe and not the toe bone at the top of the foot (metatarsal) like they initially thought it was, they said there was nothing really that could be done other than take pain killers, rest it and wear sturdy shoes.

So at least it wasn't as bad as i thought.

Might try to eat something now, as i haven't had anything since 5pm on Sunday!
