Could the pill be making me be a b*tch? And non-hormonal contraceptive alternatives?

When I started the pill at 15 I went through a list of about 5, each one made me very ill, made me bleed more, gave me migranes etc...

We finally landed on Femodene which suited me best out of the lot I had taken, but still go headaches on my 7 day break.

The GPs solution to this was take 2-3 packets consecutivly so I only had a period every 3 months rather than 4 weeks.

After each pregnancy I have always gone back on Femedene.

HOWEVER my behaviour over the last few years is quite alarming.

DH joked a few days ago that maybe we should try for another baby as Im 'so much nicer when we are doing that or Im pregnant... but we can't just keep having babies so you are nicer'

It made me think could it be the pill?

I've put it down to depression, but apparantly the pill can cause depression too?

I don't want to get pregnant thoug,

Or have a coil (the thought makes me ill) my mum and sister both had the contraceptive injection and implant and were both very ill.

If I did charting and used condoms at all times would I be setting myself up for an unwanted pregnancy?

Can you ever really be 'protected' from pregnancy with just condoms?

I feel like Ive been pumping my body full of hormones for 10 years now and am wondering just how much this has affected me?!

Would condoms and a spermicide be a good option?

I am not sure (it is such a loooong time ago) but I think that I was on Femodene.

In any case, I did not notice at the time but I definitely noticed when I stopped taking them. I was much more relaxed and easy going, less narky.

Since having the DC I have tried going back on the pill but did not like it and did not feel well when I did.

We use condoms, but I am considering the Mirena coil as a few of my friends have one and they are all very happy.

Implant is definately a no-no, I have two cousins who had massive problems after getting an implant.

the pill made me crazy, like I constantly had PMT and anxiety, it was hell. It was a lot like the mood swings I got when I was pregnant. The doc at the family planning clinic (GPs I went to didn't know anything about this kind of thing) said it was too much progestorone (sp?). Anyway, we use condoms, my dh says it's better than living with a loon. hope you feel better soon.

Wow, I think it could be the pill.

I have anxiety too.

I never put 2 and 2 together though.

I think I'll have to stop it and be extra careful with condoms, and maybe get a persona thingie.

'loon' yes thats def me

I'm watching this thread with interest, as I was on trinovum for the best part of 20 years, then last year went on Femodette ?? wonder whether it's similar to Femodene??

While I was on Femodette I was just so angry and depressed a lot of the time but it took a long time to dawn on me that maybe the pill was the cause.

2 months ago I went back to trinovum and I do seem to be on more of an even keel, but not sure whether I can really blame hormones or just other stuff.

Am seriously thinking of just ditching the pill altogether as I'm nearly 47, have only one ovary so may be lucky??

I think I'll do a trial, 6 months or something to see if theres any difference,

I just got a years supply of Femodene yesterday too

Can I return it to the chemist?!

For the ones out there who do not want any more children, would their partners consider the snip??

So you can have a break from hormones without being worried about getting pregnant?

I am pregnant with my second baby. Don't plan any more. For a few years after the birth we plan to be careful with condoms, but then, when we are sure we don't want any more, my hubby will (not that he wants to just is willing to make the sacrifice for the best) get his bits done!!!

I do not ever want to go back on the pill because I am a much more well balanced, PMT free person without it messing with my natural balance!!

If I had to take the pill, I would insist on trying many different types until I got the right one for me. I am not one to put up with bad side effects until I am sure there is no other way. Good luck!

I'm going for a copper coil today

Honestly, I am about to have a shower and get ready for the walk-in clinic

Or I might leave it till tomorrow

I will definitely get round to it. I am having my Mirena removed because I just can't tolerate the hormones any more.

So how is the copper coil different to the mirena?

It just doesn't release any hormones, that's all. Downside is that it tends to give people heavier periods, whereas the Mirena is hormonal and practically eliminates periods. Which has been great. Not so great is putting on two stone etc etc, so it's coming out!
