Ds getting poorly all the time. Doctor unconcerned. I am how often is too often?

Ds is almost 6. He is in his 2nd year of Kindergarten. He gets poorly all the time, but it's not like he's catching everything that's going around. It's always the same, one minute he's ok, then really suddenly he feels ill and has a high temperature of around 40 to 41 degrees. Then he is white, shaking, has no appretite and just lies on the sette for 3 days or so, then it passes and he's back to normal. He responds well to calpol/neurofen, and his temp comes down quite well, but when the med wears off, it's sky high again.

I am concerned that it's so often, so in March I started to keep a record. So far :-

25 march, ear and eye infection, anti biotics.

16 April Temp 40.8

01 May Temp

13 May Temp 39

21 June Temp 39.5

24 August Temp 40.4

17. Sept Temp 40.5

1. Oct Temp 41.1

That's an average of once a month being ill for 3 or 4 days. Was back at dr today and he said it wasn't unusual. Never had anything like this with my older 2 ds.

I think that sounds too often and you are right to be concerned.

Were you somewhere different in July? Just noticed he had a good month then.

If all else fails (ie doctor won't take you seriously) have you considered putting him on vitamins to see if you can boost his immune system?

Yes, I mean, bearing in mind this has been going on a lot longer, and I only finally started keeping a note in March to see if I was imagining or over playing the frequency, but now I have it written down I'm really not happy. I just don't accept the 'kids in school pick stuff up' line, as I never had this with my other 2 ds, and I don't know anyone else who has a kid so often poorly.

Dr seems totally unconcerned. 2 illneses ago I was at another (emergency) doc as ours on holiday, and he was totally patronising.

I'd def ask for blood tests, just to check.

Have you tried vitamins/tonic of some kind? I am not normally one to suggest such a thing as I tend to view such things sceptically, but I did find when one of mine was younger and always getting coughs etc that Minadex seemed to boost him up afterwards. It was probably just coincidence, but it helped me (and the patient) to feel as though we were doing something to make him better.

No, July as normal, school ended end of July. Don't have an explanation for July. Poorly as normal for summer holiday.

We are giving him iron, and doc took blood today and will phone me tonight, I obviously don't want my son to have anything major wrong, but worrying doc will call and say bloods normal.

If the bloods are normal, that will be great news. Some children do catch more bugs than others. It may only last this year and then he may never get another bug all his childhood.

But I can understand your concern and do think the doctor is being dismissive of your concerns given the history you have shown him/her. But then, bloods have been taken, so maybe not so dismissive?

results showed signs of bacterial infection. If worse to day, to give antibiotics. Well, he is a lot worse now than this morning. He seems to start off better, then by mid day gets a lot worse. He's now burning up lying on the settee.

He is so tiny and has to have a daily injection of growth hormone. Both the doctor and the specialist insist it is 'extemely' unlikely the 2 are linked, but I wonder. And I feel so sad for my poor little boy who has to endure so much.

And, selfishly, I feel so pissed off with being housebound for 3 or 4 days a month. But mostly I wish I could just make it better. Poor little sod. Looks like this will be a 4 or 5 day-er.

Am also concerned with what will happen when he starts school, missing up to a week every month. Feel v. sad and tearful about it today.

Oh Ernest, your poor little boy, and poor you too. It is probably worse for you actually as you have to sit by and see him suffering and feel so helpless about it.

I have no idea if there can be links between this and his growth hormone but could you speak to his doctor about a possible link?

Also, is he getting the ABs now? Maybe he has had something in his system which has kept reappearing each month but now the ABs will knock the infection on its head?

Sorry, not got any cleverer ideas or comments than these, but I am sorry to read of your sorrow today.
