Yes, it's a bit worrying... I have a LO and am PG.... But you've got to put it in perspective.

THe jump in instances is from 40-odd per 100,000 to 70-odd per 100,000 population.

I think you just need to follow the precautions - maintain hygiene etc.,

Not sure what else there is to do... But put it this way, after 7/7, did you just never travel on public transpor again??? Of course you did.

LO = Little one. He's 13 months now.

I'm due in 2 weeks.

AFAIK, the vaccine is as effective as the common flu vaccine.

I don't think the swine flu strain is any more contagious or agressive than regular flu.

Iworryalot - BBC was better and far less scaremongering involved. Okay, 29 people have now dies but thats 29 out of 55,000. Earlier this week it was 17 out of 10,000 so I for one am far more reassured by that-it really does seem to be mild in most people.

I know this scary figure of 65,000 deaths is going to be all over the papers tomorrow but bear in mind that:

a)Its very much a hypothetical, upper, maximum limit used by governemt as a means to plan for worst case scenario

b)They've actually said 3,000 TO 65,000 but you'll just get "65,000 could die" in all the papers because lets face it, thats a far more sensational headline

c) Between 5,000 and 7,000 people die of ordinary flu each year in the UK.

d) In 1999-2000, a total of 21,000 people (young and old)died from flu in the UK. Whilst I appreciate that this is a new strain, I don't remember there being headlines like this over that particularly bad flu year.

Our irresponsible media is whipping this up a storm - far far more people are getting this than figures suggest and symptoms are either so mild that they're not bothering the doctor or they go on to make a full recovery.

(and I'm saying all this as an asthmatic who is almost 30 wks pg and had ordinary flu last year.)

I totally agree that the media are making it so much worse than it really is. People die of all sorts of things, we just aren't usually informaed about it within minutes in such a sensationalist, scaremongering fashion.

I am worried about the vaccine...it has been rushed through. How do we know it is safe to give our children?

Had to comment on the vaccine issue. 'New' flu vaccines are made very year, the vaccine for SF will be made in the same way with the same components just on a much larger scale. Still the choice to have it rests with the individual, no compulsion will be involved.
