tonsillitis - how long til you start feeling better?

I have had acute tonsillitis since Monday, on antibiotics since yesterday, can't swallow so can't eat, drink or talk at the moment and am feeling pretty miserable. Any ideas roughly how long til I start feeling vaguely human again? I would have asked the doc but the whole 'can't talk' thing s a bit limiting.

I usually have about 2 days of fever, can't eat or talk without sounding like i've got a golf ball on my mouth! One day either side of that I feel a bit rough, but not so bad. Hope you feel better soon.

Join the club, though mine doesn't sound as bad as yours. You really need to try and drink and if you can stand it have some toast which apparently sloughs off the crap at the back.

Failing that just try ice lollies. Have you take any ibruprofen? You can alternate that with paracetamol every few hours. I'm finding it the only relief.

Ibuprofen is definitely helping, hadn't thought about alternating with paracetemol so will try that. I am trying to force down some fluids today as was getting quite dehydrated but it's not just the pain, it's like I physically can't swallow iykwim. This isn't much fun, is it?

Yuk, mine's no where near that bad, it just hurts to swallow. Try and force down some paracetamol. Have you got any ice lollies? I had 4 yesterday plus half a tub of Hagen Daaz!

I've also got Difflam spray which sort of numbs it. I have also got lots of horrid pimply spots on my tongue which is just as painful really.

dd1 may never forgive me if I eat all her rocket lollies! She's getting pretty fed up with poorly no-fun mummy though so perhaps I can convince her it's for the greater good. Hope you feel better soon.

About 2 or 3 days of misery and then I start to feel a bit better. Soluble asprin helps alot. It seems to get into the ulcers and numb them a little. Huge sympathies from me - it's my 'thing' -I get it at least once a winter - and my poor DD (2) has it at the moment. Try to get in as many fluids as possible.

Go back to your childhood and go with milk lollies and angel delight because the milks a 'feed' as my old mum used to say, ice cream, ice lollies, jublies and ice pops and the kids will be happy too.

You could try using soluble aspirin (or other soluble painkiller)- gently gargling then swallowing it (as part of your painkiller dose).
I usually start to feel better after a couple of days on ABs so hope you feel better soon.

poor you - if it's really bad then it can take a while, but dequadin (sp>!) are pretty good (can get them at any chemist), have been using them with tonsiitis since childhood. My dd who's 1 has just got over it, huge scary temps, must be doing the rounds. Wish you well.
