Mannnnn

I'm feeling rough.

In the last 3 hours I've developed a headache, ears hurt, throats sore, feel queasy & knackered.

MIL just rang and said 16 of her pupils have suspected swine flu and herself.

Have I caught the plague?

I'm worried about the kids though

My kids, not MILs pupils.

Are you stocked up with calpol etc just in case?

Fever I think is one of the key diagnostics...

I believe d&v is another tell tale sign.

Get calpol and nurofen for the kids (just incase) and some paracetamol for you.

I'm starting to stock up on things I'll need if we all go down with it at once. I never have anything in usually as my ds's are very rarely ill, but I bought calpol yesterday so that's a start!

I had all the same symptoms as you on Thursday, slightly less yesterday and today am just feeling a bit under the weather and very tired. No temperature either. Hope you just have what I had, which I assume was just a virus.

By the way, I had also been in contact with someone who had been in contact with someone that had confirmed swine flu as well.

I've been feeling bad today and yesterday too. I have blocked, runny nose, headache, eyes hurt, feeling physically drained. I went bak to bed at 11:30 and woke at 4pm.
My ds's are 2 and 5 months, they are also both really snotty. I've ben keeping an eye on their temperature and ds2 is having calpol for his teething anyway, but I am concerned.
I feel like I just have a normal little cold, but keep thinking, what if? Especially as the boys are so young.
I don't have fever or d&v, so will try to relax until those symptoms hit of they do.

I've sent the boys to my parents in the hope that a good nights sleep will help and told them my symptoms just incase they didn't want to risk swine flu, but they agree it sounds like just a little cold/summer virus

Send your DH for the following:

-paracetamol/ibuprofen for you
-Same for kids
-tissues
-loo rolls
-food for seven days (easy to make/eat)
-drinks - lots of squash etc - you will be drinking but not eating.

  • Mouthwash (if you've been hoofing a lot it helps make you feel a bit less gross I find).

While you are still relatively okay, find your NHS numbers out - the red books have them - any repeat prescriptions will have them on. WRITE DOWN the number of your GP somewhere prominent in large letters you can still see when you can't see straight and are hallucinating small goblins running round the floor.

Most supermarkets are open till 10pm - send him now - if he goes down with it tonight and he hasn't gone you'll be stuffed!

Oh and all children under three should have their symptoms reported to the GP or out of hours service and need to be seen - they will phone diagnose over 3s but under 3s need checking in case it's something else (no-one wants to miss a meningitis case by assuming it's swine flu).

Try not to panic

Thank you whomovedmychocolate I have spoken to dp aout my worries and he tells me I'm being silly nd it's just a cold that I've picked up from the boys and I should stop being such a drama queen, so I think I can sing for any shpping!
I have all the essentials here anyway and have sent a bottle of calpol with each child to their grandparents.
If we're the same on tuesday, I'll call the doctor, or if anyone gets worse, sooner (obviously). Tuesday will be 5 days of me feeling rough, and ds2 being snotty. Ds1 has been snotty for 2 years pretty much non-stop, so will see how we get on. have told my parents to call if they need to and not to hesitate getting the boys any medical treatment as they see necessary.

myjobismum That's my thought too. If it wasn't for this whole swine flu pandemic - or whatever they're calling it now, i wouldn't be worried enough to seek medical advice and would be treating at home for a week or so anyway.......

Don't panic too much - even if it is the dreaded pig bug, in most people it's not too bad. We had it (we think) and though pretty foul, it really was no where near the worst bug in the world. Lots of people are saying the same. Fingers crossed for you.

myjobismum - ear pulling and a high temperature, with not wanting to chew are signs of an ear infection which is not nice.

I think I would be on to the docs on this one. Teething does not give you a temperature and she may well need antibiotics.

No idea about swine flu though other than I know somebody who has it in RL now.

It's good to be sensible about these things myjobismum - however do bear in mind small children can deteriorate quickly and there are worse things than swine flu out there which we should be mindful of.

For example:

(1) If a child of under 3 has a persistent temp of over 38 for more than an hour after being given a dose of paracetamol/ibuprofen
(2) if the temp hits 40
(3) If the child is unresponsive/floppy/very confused.
(4) If breathing difficulties develop or cyanosis occurs.
(5) Stiff neck/light aversion
(6) Rash which doesn't fade (NB some cases of swine flu have included a rash apparently).

Coughing is good though - it shows the lungs are working well and discharging any gunk which is in there. Wheezing on the other hand is bad. But coughing - while alarming to hear, is a good sign.

Incidentally DS has always had a raised temp with teething - I don't know why but GP said that was normal.

I think DS has "it". There is a case of it at his school in his year.

He's been red hot for two days, cold symptoms etc, tonight he's just been sick but is now sleeping.

DH is also ill, think he might have it too.

My thoughts are we just treat as normal flu and no need to phone doctor but am I wrong, should I report it and get tamiflu? Mixed info everywhere.

Report
Frizbe · 11/07/2009 22:22

Kbear they're only giving tamiflu to the at risk groups, everyone else has to slum it with normal cold and flu treatments, break out the beechams.

Report
Kbear · 11/07/2009 22:24

ok,that's what I thought Friz
