Does this sound like a broken toe?

Hello, sorry I have had to post this on here, but figured if I'm gonna get a good answer, it'd be here.

Now stupid clumsy me, decided to walk into my DD's sofa last night, which is very solid. I was walking pretty fast that the shock of it almost made me fall over head first. It was very painful, and I was pretty much screaming, which is very unlike me. This happened about 4pm yesterday.

It's my little toe on the right foot. It swelled up, and there was some bruising in between the little toe and the next toe. I tried to not walk around too much as it was very painful and throbbing a lot. Took some paracetamol (sp?). This morning I woke up, and it's still swollen and the bruising has gotten a lot worse. The bruising has gone round to cover half of my toe, and has gone down to a big patch on my foot. It's still throbbing, and though I can walk, it's still painful and I'm limping as I walk.

Firstly, does it sound like it's broken? I've hit my toes on stuff before, as I am pretty clumsy, but they've never ended up like this. So I'm just bit worried. DP said I should go to the hospital, but even if it was broken, there's not much they can do right? Is there anything I can get for the bruising/pain? Any advice would be very much appreciated x

I broke a bone in my foot at Christmas, and took DS1 to A&E this morning with a broken toe as well. Both times told yes, was broken, but nothing will help except time and painkillers. No strapping or anything. Told supportive shoes would help.

I'd get voltarol from the doc for pain, and piggyback that with paracetamol.

for you. Was v.v.v.v.v.v. painful.

When DH broke his two toes (on the windy drier of all things!!) the two toes went blue and swelled ...

A trip to the A&E was really to confirm that the toes were broken and all he was told to do was to keep them strapped up ( toes were just taped together to the good ones with surgical/microsc... tape) and told it would take about 6 weeks to heal..

I suppose you could try arnica cream .. but it was more a case of DH just letting it heal on its own

HTH

I am Himbo! I just come on here every so often now. Don't post as much as I use to or would like to

Thanks guys. And thanks for the suggestions, will pop into Boots after picking DD up and see if I can get one of them. Not sure whether I trust myself enough to tape the toe up. Been wearing trainers whilst I'm out as they're not so tight, though it hurts just having socks on! Lol.

I am normally Fimbo btw.

I was told trainers are the best thing to wear.

Hope your toe is better soon.

can you bend the toe? If not, it is almost certainly broken (only know this because I have been looking it up online as I think I may have broken my finger!!)

Ah I remember you! Cool, I'll have to stick with trainers.

But no I can't bend my toe. And bless you. Hope you haven't.

DP keeps saying I should go hospital to have it xrayed anyway as the bone may not heal properly if it's not in line properly. But from what I've heard and read, I'm guessing it'll be a waste of time, especially since it's only the little toe.

They can't set broken toe bones.

Also, it's entirely possible it's just very very badly sprained. The pain when walking is because the swelling goes all the way around and previously you had no idea how much you used your baby toe did you...!?

Try ibuprofen as it's a mild anti inflammatory and available over the counter. Also, have you iced it? That will help with the swelling which will have a big impact on your ability to walk on it. ice it at least three times a day for about 20 minutes each time.

Hurts like hell. You have my sympathy!

oh, and be prepared for your toe to weirdly never look quite the same again. I didn't even break mine and it still took about 10 years for it to straighten up. Seriously weird.

OhBling, thank you! Shall get some ibuprofen too, have brought the arnica stuff though and put it on so shall wait for that to do something. Will ice it too, hadn't thought of that. I've noticed its gone more purple and blue now, but I'm guessing that's from walking around too much as had to go pick DD up, then we went to chemist and got something to eat, as I think I have an applaudible excuse to eat out tonight

I did show the chemist and she suggested that I should have it double checked at hospital, but I really don't fancy the idea of waiting around for ages, with DD moaning and getting bored to only be told if it's broken or not. Though I suppose if I was sensible enough, I should do lol.
