Mirena Coil - love it or hate it?

JiminyCricket · 27/02/2009 22:41

I need to go for a coil fitting. Have had copper coil before and was happy with it (GP had problem fitting Mirena coil that time so went for other one). GP now recommending Mirena. I am kind of interested but wonder if I should stick with what i know I am Ok with, as have a low tolerance of side effects etc. And, on a more curious note, if coil has a good effectiveness anyway, why stick hormones in it as well? Any experiences?

Love it, and it is liberating not having periods.

On the downside a lot of mumsnetters have had one and hated it.

Hate it. Made my periods heavier and gave me period pain which I never had before. Also screwed my cycle when it was removed- 60 day cycles
Never again!

love it, not had any side effects bar weight gain (though that might be the chocolate and chips)

Hated it. Progesten and I don't get on.

Spots, weight gain, irregular bleeding and bleeding and bleeding. Mood swings. No sex drive.

If you're happy with the copper, why switch?

I haven't had one, but was looking into it last year, and from what I heard I wouldn't advise you to change if you're happy with your copper one. If you do have side effects, bleeding etc, they won't take it out immediately, but will wait for months and months and months to see if it calms down (probably because the mirena is so expensive)

If it ain't broke don't fix it, I say...

Has anyone been on duphaston (or any other progesterone) and had bad side effects and then gone on to the mirena coil with no problems?

Love it - on my second, no side effects at all. But never had any problems with hormonal contraception either

I loved mine for the first 2 years then the hormones started to affect me and I felt permenantly pregnant. I had it removed and be be having a non hormonal one next time. It appears that one of the advantages of the hormones is lck of periods.

it's okay - no periods for about 10 now (had it fitted a year ago)

I had one inserted under GA at the end of Jan and since then had cramps and heavy bleeding for 3 weeks. I am just spotting now but have broken out in acne for the first time ever (all over face and back) and am up in the middle of the night for no reason. I am just waking up after sleeping for a couple of hours and cannot get back to bed. I am sure this is linked to my mirena. Have been a bitch and felt not like myself. I have also put on about half a stone. I am not sure whether to stick it out.

I did try the mini-pill once and it did not work for me so I am thinking that I am not tolerant to progesterone. Like Queenfee I feel pregnant.

I was advised a Mirena as I have adenymosis and suffer from very heavy and painful periods so a copper coil is unsuitable. If it works for you I would stick with that.

Find it OK - no periods at all, although still get the hormonal mood swings. And also have gained about a stone

love it - no periods, stable mood. It completely took away all of my dreadful pmt. I didn't have any trouble losing post-baby weight once I had it put in - I'd been a bit concerned about this.

BUT the first few weeks were awful, I swung wildly between distraught, angry, depressed... went sobbing back to the GP! She was lovely and said it was unusual but certainly not unheard of, it would almost certainly settle down within a week or two, and she would take it out if I wanted. I decided to hold off for a bit and a few days later all was fine - have never looked back!

Love it.

Got it after getting v heavy periods (for first time ever) after having dd. Tried going back on the pill to regulate them but GP didn't want to keep me on it long term (I'm v v old). Very easy to have it fitted by the GP (but she's done a lot, apparently that makes a difference). Have had it for almost 3 years now. No periods, no pain, no weight gain, no side effects.

Cannot recommend it highly enough.

Hated it.

1.5 stone weight gain. irregular bleeding all the time, no sex drive, server suicidal depression, acne, cramps, bloated stomach like i was 6 months pregnant.

Upsetting when I live a healthy life style. I has been awful for the last two years and only just realised what was making me feel like this.

Just had it changed for the copper coil. feel so much better love it already.

I HAD MERENA FITTED 11 WEEKS AGO THOUGHT IT WAS FINE THEN THE BLOATED STOMACH STARTED I NOW LOOK 5 MONTHS PREGNANT EVEN THOUGH I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING WEIGHT WATCHERS DIET AND HAVE LOST WEIGHT EVERYWHERE ELSE MY STOMACH CONTINUES TO BLOAT. WENT BACK TO DOCTORS SHE SAID THIS WAS A COMMON SIDE AFFECT DUE TO OESTROGEN HORMONE IN COIL AND BEING IN WOMB IT IS ALL CENTRED AROUND STOMACH AREA. SHE SAID IT MIGHT CALM DOWN AFTER A FEW MORE MONTHS. I AM QUITE DEPRESSED ABOUT THIS SHE SAID SHE WOULD TAKE IT OUT NEXT WEEK IF I WANTED HER TO. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND HAS IT SETTLED DOWN EVENTUALLY.
