well what can i say, dd 14 mth ,has been limping for 3 weeks, holding her foot funny, been to a&e 3times, my gp, been told 4 different reasons, anyway she was kept in from fri night and is still in,she is back on a drip having antibiotics, had 2 lots of xrays and is having a one scan tomorrow, they think it is a bone infection, she wont put her heal down, and it is swollen, hard, red and hot.she was in hospital around 3 weeks ago with gastroenteritis, and i am pretty sure all this has been caused by the drip she had then (bad hygiene in hospital) but i am also going to demand a mrsa test, as symptoms are VERY similar.

all in all i am disgusted with the whole experience, lack of hygiene, lack of care and help given, they are eing very cagey about actual diagnosis, but i am going to get to the bottom of it all

wish me luck, , anyone else have any similar experiences?

My Mother is a retired SRN and is horrified with all the stories of infections - she said in her day they would have been mortified if anyone EVER got any sort of infection, everything was sterile clean and the Matron sorted anything out that wasn't. Sorry this doesn't really help you does it? It makes me really mad to read stories like this though. Hope you dd makes a recovery and is home soon, please let us know how she gets on. Keep notes of anything that is said or done in her treatment incase you want to complain after this is all over - it will keep the dates/events/treatments straight in your head. Maybe someone with a Legal background could advise?

Take care we are all thinking of you and your dd

Hi Lilsum ,the symptoms you describe are identical to those my daughter suffered at the same age. After much deliberation it turned out to be arthritis (this sounds bad I know but it has been very successfully treated). Have the doctors discounted this? Hope she's better soon.

hi everyone, thanks for the lovely messages nice to know people care, this is the 1st chance i have had, they have agreed to let us come out the odd time in between iv antibiotics,

she had the scan yesterday, but didnt get the results till today, she has a bone infection,so needs antibiotics on iv for up to 4 weeks, then oral for 2 weeks, they are taking blood again tomorrow, but thankfully they have caught it early, even though she will be on iv for up to 4 weeks they can teach me to do it, or get a community nurse to come in every 8 hours,so therefore we may be allowed home, will have to see what happens, gonna review her again on sat morn

xx

Sorry to hear about this LM.
Hope it clears up quickly and your dd gets back to normal soon.

Did they tell you what has caused it?

lilsmum · 13/04/2005 16:05

acting very cagey still, saying she could have stood on something !?? that aint the case i dont think though, i have been looking on internet and finding out info, it is usually caused by bacteria, so either after a operation or a DRIP!! its bacteria that gets into the blood, so i am pretty certain it was caused by the drip in her foot while in a few weeks ago with gastroenteritis, too coincidental(sp?) to not be linked tbh, thanks for reply

Hmmm I think you could be right LM.

Surely if she had stood on something it would have had to puncture the skin badly to cause a bone infection?

Good luck

EXACTLY!! no mark, no cut on her foot nothing, very strange, only one way bacteria has got in there and that is down to them!!

And you would of noticed!

Honestly!!!

My dd was admitted in to hospital this time last year. I had gone to see the GP and he told me to go straight to the hospital which we did and we ended up staying overnight for obs etc. Anyway the next day the Senior Consulatant waltzed into our room with a group of other Dr's and said there was nothing wrong with dd and I was to go home (this was without doing tests)

She got a shock when I told her I was going no where until they found out what was wrong with my dd. They did a blood test and it turned out she had an infection!

Needless to say I saw a different consultant after that!

they are pathetic aren't they!!! i have lost all faith in the nhs after all this, it has really opened my eyes, there is lack of communication between doctors and the nurses, i am having to constantly remind them to do her antibiotics, and meals etc, its a absolute joke!! the nurses just stand around chatting!! it has been one cock up after another since we went in last friday, and i am ready for blowing my top!!and the joke of it all is... when they admitted dd they said to me... you can be involved as you like or you can go home and leave it all to us (like you would) and god help dd if i was the kind of mother to leave her, she would have starved, be dehydrated, and had prob had no treatment!!i am totally exhausted with it all, they are imbeciles and that is putting it lightly!! i have other words i could use lol
