polyp in womb!

I found out yesterday that the persistant pain inside and intermittent bleeding was down to a growth in my womb called a polyp. Ofcourse I googled and found out it is another word for tumor. I have a one-year old and now I am petrified it's cancer. There, I've said it. Has anyone had polyps before? Can anyone reassure me? I'm seeing a gynocologist privately tomorrow as I am so worried.

i am pretty sure that polyps are compltely harmless groths that are very common

Don't worry purplebee. i had a polyp which was benign. i had it removed anyway but there wasn't anything sinister and the op was very quick and simple.

Please try not to worry too much, hopefully the following will alay some of your fears.

I've had a uterine polyp too - mine was congenital in nature which meant it was there from birth. (saw a photo of it too!). My particular one released hormones and also caused my periods to become irregular. Think mine was actually called a penundulated fibroid (a little bell shaped thing that hung into the uterine cavity). Its totally benign in nature.

It will likely be removed surgically via a keyhole surgery op called a laparoscopy.

99% of uterine polyps are benign (not cancer). They are very common in the age group 40-50.

I had a uterine polyp in Jan of this year. Found out because I had a post menopausal bleed. Had a hysteroscopy and removal of polyp under general anasthetic, just in for half a day. Anasthetic given was a very quick one.

You are being checked out. Hopefully everything will be ok. By the way, tumour is only another word for growth. Hope this makes you feel better.

I had one (at 48), it was teeny but they remove them routinely and biopsy just in case: mine actually fell off during the op, so they never got any lab reports, but a few months later there's no sign of it on u/s. Agree with all thats been said - consultant said they were benign, but on v v rare occasions could turn malignant further down the line so best to remove them anyway.

'Course, I worried too - also have young children - so no use telling you not to

Purplebee (great name btw) - my SiL has just had this same experience so I know the figures off by heart. 0.5% of polyps in the women are cancerous, your risk doubles or triples if you've never had children. If you've had the problem less than a year it's very rare for it not to be treated with simple removal of the polyp.

So in the unlikely event of it being the big C, it's normally quite easily fixed

Hi all

5 years ago (approx) I had a ultrasound scan and a fibroid was found in my lower pelvis area, I am 48 years of age, I went through the menapause 12 years ago and have been on HRT now for 12 years
I am now being weened of it.

Unfortunatly this is causing problems, I was on a patch {fematrix 40} for a number off years and my new doctor she said this is to high a dose to be using and has now put me on a combination tablet, which is lower than the patch which had 1.25mg of estradiol in it.

Today I had a ultrasound because since the change of HRT I keep having heavy bleeds and do not bleed, but have now had four heavy bleeds in 2 months of taking the new HRT.
She wanted to see why this was happening, the ultrasound showed

1. The fibroid is still present (not sue yet if it may be bigger)
   
   
2. I have a Polyp in my womb
   
   There was a mention of the number 43 (think this may be the size of either the fibroid or the polyp)
   will know more when I see the doctor again.
   I ache down below, like a dim period ache, sometimes there is pains, sharp ones,
   I have lower back pain, feel tired, nauseas from time to time.
   
   The stanographer said that polyps make you bleed and this could be the culprit.
   
   Is any body having or had the same expereince/s?
   I am unsure what is going to happen.....
   
   I suppose the polyp will have to be removed!!
   I also see they call polyps TUMORS........
   
   Any comments appreciated, please?

My girlfriend has recently found out that she has x2 polys on her womb and a fibroid. She is currently experiencing very similar symtoms to yourself.

She has pain down below, also like dim period pains, sometime are are also sharp pains. She also has lower back pains and does feel tied all the time.

She also has a lot of pain done below when she has a full bladder, are you experiencing this???

She is currently very stressed and very scared and to be perfectly honest her stress levels are getting worse by the day.

Last night we went to see a specialist and he has suggested that she has another scan after her period to see if the polys have fallen off. Does this normally happen??

Are all these symtoms you both are experiencing related to having polyps and fibroid??

The most likely way they will be romoved is during a hysteroscopy- camera in womb with instrumens attached. It is possible they can do this under a local rather than a general.

I had a hysteroscopy a few months back for an investigation and had no anaesthesia of any kind.

annie I am not sure 100% but i think it is unlikely that your small polyp could cause all that pain- more likely to be a result of changing your HRt and it not suiting you- can you ask to try another kind?

Yes, even one polyp can cause pain and irregular bleeding. I am to go in for a hysteroscopy and removal of a polyp on Thursday this week, it has to be done under a general. I can imagine the pain would be a little worse if there was also a fibroid. I have also changed HRT and that did not cause any pain but did cause irregular bleeding until the right one for me was established.

Hi im 44 years young. I have been having heavy bleeding periods and terrible cramping pains for years. Finally got a doctor to refer me to hospital only because i was very anaemic. A scan showed i have a 3cm fibroid and a polyp. Went in for an ablation (burning away the lining of the womb to normal people) in December but they couldn't do it as the fibroid in the way. Now had letter come to say going in hospital in April for a polyp resection. Anyone know what that is, does it hurt?

After numerous visits to docs saying various things for my lower ache pain I had pelvic and vaginal scan saw specialist for thickening of womb he said it was polyp went for hysteroscopy with no anesthetic but after he tried said polyp was bigger than he thought so waiting for appointment for general every day theres dull pain worse full bladder it really gets me down is it normal for this ache

I have been for lots of tests and results have came back I have a tumour on the bladder also a fibroid and a polyp on the womb, I am having surgery on Thursday to remove the tumour on the bladder, symptoms I had were bleeding in between periods heavy bleeding on periods but was always treated for a kidney infection from my local GPS until a New doctor come on! she looked at the results from the hospital and none were coming back with infection! so investigated further please if you have any advise or gone through similar experiences of these mentioned please message.

Hi I wondered if any one can give advice. My symptoms started over two yrs ago now, abnormal bleeding, pain, headaches, hair growth more than usual, and feeling washed out. I'm due a opp for a polyp on my womb but I have bad lungs and have been turned away twice due to infection in my lungs . I'm really worried now because it's been so long. If this polyp isn't sinister and they remove it, how long does it take for symptoms to go?? Thanks

I had a polyp on my cervix. It was snipped off and that was the end of it. Apparently they are common.

Also had the fibroid dull ache and sharp pain experience. it turned out to be a 'deteriorating fibroid', i.e. was disintegrating. It wasn't removed but I now have no symptoms, I I assume it has deteriorated away to nothing.

Fibroids are the Kevin the Teenager of the neoplasm world. Rarely dangerous, just endlessly irritating.

Hi I'm 22 years I have never had children, I have been suffering really bad with abdominal and pelvic pain for about 5 months. About a month ago they found a lump in my womb, Which they think maybe a polyp but won't know for sure till I have a hysteroscopy to see it better. I keep getting really bad pains when laying down or standing for to long. My period this month has been a brownish black colour and I was wounding if anyone else has had and think similar to these symptoms when they have had growths in the womb.

I had a large polyp removed recently and have to admit my symptoms were very different from that as I had constant red bleeding and no pain. Good luck with the hysteroscopy and hope it's a simple issue to sort out

I have a large polyp in my womb, had it for about a year. I've suffered with constant bleeding, like spotting which my GP said was in relation to pcos which I've had for 10 years.
Had the investigation hysteroscopy and told that it needs to be taken out under GA.
since the first hysteroscopy I've had constant bleeding, 3 visits to A&E one via an ambulance as a large clot got caught in my cervix so my blood pressure dropped.
If you are told you have one, push for the surgery. I've suffered for a year with this and finally having it taken out this week.

I had a prolapsed womb and when taken in to see a gynecologist I was told I had 3 polyps in my cervix. I had to go back to have them taken out it was very painful having it done in the hospital doctors room. After they where removed I ad the camera put up only to find two big masses of them in my womb. I am waiting on surgery but I'm having very painful stomach aches and down below at my entrance is very painful. I've had no bleeding for nearly 8 months but I was never told any kind of pain if any to expect. Can anyone help if they have had the same. Thank you.

My experience via NHS was see GP, see gynaecologist the following day (Friday) have hysteroscopy on the following Tuesday. Second consultant who did hysteroscopy said she could see it wasn't of great concern and either leave well alone or she could remove it. Choice was mine. I decided to leave well alone.
I went back four months later with same problem of bleeding and abdominal pain. Same swift response except I bypassed the first gynaecologist. Hysteroscopy but this time it was biopsies just to be absolutely sure it wasn't anything more sinister as I carry a few risk factors for endometrial cancer. She said there and then she was pretty sure it wasn't malignant.
I had my formal results by letter about eight days later.
Polyps are usually benign.

Endometrial cancer tends to affect post menopausal women, the obese or overweight, those with a family history and women on tamoxifen. Also at higher risk are those with history of PCOS. HRCT is linked to less than 1% of endometrial tumours.
The greatest risks (37% are linked to obesity and lack of exercise).
