Scenario 2 definitely. You could try fartlek training too and variations on this theme. Very good cardio workout. Try running hard for a couple of minutes then walking for 30 seconds (find a time that works for you). And try running, then slowing to a jog, then running again. It's a good workout. You may look a but crazy though I warn you.
