Anyone know about thyroid?

Just wondering about the effects of underactive/overactive thyroid.

Since having kids my body doesn't feel like mine any more (can't shift the weight etc).. also dh reckons I am much more irritable/angry than I ever was(+ I agree)

So,I am just looking at possible causes (other than depression- which of course is omnipresent!)

Anyone got any experience in this area?

Hi Unicorn

sorry to hear you are feeling bad

Yes it could well be underactive thyroid. It stops producing the hormone your body needs to maintain a healthy metabolism and you constantly feel knackered and inert and this makes you seem irritable to others

Ask your gp for a blood test to check your thyroid functions. The rememdy is very simple, a daily tablet of synthetic thyroid hormone to replace those that your body is not producing. It will be a life long dose but as JJ says, if you are going to have a chronic disease then this is about the best one to have.

have a look here but and make an appointment with the gp on monday.

The good news is that once you get diagnosed your life will change and you will be back to your old self again. HTH

no worries, mate (see I'm picking up the lingo already)

I was undiagnosed and feeling like a zombie for over three years, my pregnancy with ds1 upset my endocrinology plus it runs through my family so I am evangelical about getting people to check with their gps as I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Which singer? We are in Perth in the West of Australia, we actually get quite a few people coming through despite being the most isolated city in the world.

oh thanks

Unfortunately our built in babysitter (MIL) has selfishly gone back to Malaysia for four months, but may try and get to that

Do badger the docs, badger them til they give you a blood test, it is so easy to pass off mothers as "just being a bit tired, or still having baby fat"

cheers Suzy, hope you get a night out despite selfish mil!!!!

I shall book a doc's appointment asap...
but I betcha they will try and talk me out of any sort of 'tests' .. it seems easier for them to prescribe AD'S.
