worried about my cough

I caught a cough in July, and DD2 got it at the same time.It lasted a week, then went, two weeks later it was back & I've had it ever since. After 3 weeks of it I went to the Drs,as it was driving me crackers. She told me to come back in 3 weeks if it hadn't gone,so this week,I went back again & saw a different Dr who was far more helpful. She said that coughs can take weeks to get rid of & that sometimes you are left with debris in the lungs which is hard to cough up & it could be that. She advised trying steam inhalations, but that if it hadn't gone in another 3 weeks, she'd send me for a chest x ray to rule out anything sinister.

Apparently as a non smoker,I'm low risk for lung cancer, but my cousins husband never smoked in his life either & was diagnosed with it last year.Thankfully his was caught in time, but I'm very scared now & struggling to stop feeling panicky about it.

Anyone got any advice?

You have my sympathies. I've had a chesty cough for two weeks and it is driving me up the wall.

Has your DD had the cough all this time too?

I think the lung cancer thing has you panicked. Understandable but also highly unlikely. If you are v worried I'm sure you can ask for a second opinion or push for a chest x ray sooner than the three weeks one offered. Could be better to put your mind at rest.

Thankyou both.

DD2 only had the cough for a week & has been fine since.

I'm feeling dreadful, very tearful.I suffer from anxiety anyway & this has intensified it.I might go back to the Drs next week if things haven't improved. She knows about my anxiety & had referred me for treatment,so might push things along for me.

You have my sympathies also. I am sort of in the same boat but with a sore throat, swollen lymph nodes on my neck which keep coming back for the last 3 weeks. I have googled (stupid) and am now convinced I have some sort of cancer but am hoping it's just because I had to stop two courses of antibiotics for tonsilitis due to being intollerant to both and that the infection has not totally gone.

Go to the drs to put your mind at rest, that's what i'm going to do this week.

I've also had a cough for a similar length of time and am being nagged to go to the doctors, so you have my sympathies - it's bloody annoying isn't it.

Try not to worry about the cancer thing - although that is understandable. It could be that your GP is potentially sending you for the x-ray to try and allay your anxieties.

Thankyou.I rang & spoke to her today & explained how worried I was & she said that she could tell I was very distressed about the whole thing & that an x ray would be the best thing to set my mind at rest. She says she doesn't think it is anything to worry about, but I'll obviously worry until I know,so she is sending me to the hospital tomorrow.Apparently they do them on a walk in basis & she should have the results in a week. She is a complete star!

I am so glad I took yor advice & rang.I know I'm not in the clear yet,but knowing that in a week/10 days I should have some sort of answer is a huge help. Please cross your fingers for me?

ledodgy,I had that sore throat thing last year & mine lasted about 3 weeks,it came & went too. Most of the kids in dd's class had it,plus the teacher.2 children were hospitalized it was so bad.My dd,fortunately didn't get it,but by some freak I did.It was dreadful & I sympathise.I hope it goes soon.

LilRedWG,I'm sorry to hear you have it too.Apparently Drs do not normally get concerned about a cough unless you have had it for 3 months!

Beeper-I wondered that,I was whooping so much the other week, that the dd's wanted to know how I made 'that funny noise'.Can you get it if you've been immunised?
