Thought I broke my ankle yesterday.....

I tripped over in the field at stables and landed ontop of my foot and I heard it cracking, it was awful. It swelled abit but i could still walk abit on it through the pain. Decided to go to A&E and they x rayed it and then told me it wasn't broken.

Today it is killing still, hasn't bruised very much but limping around.

Keep thinking about the awful cracking!

If it continues to hurt, get them to re x-ray. A+E have been known to miss fractures..

Yes - but the X rays do get reviewed by the radiologists.
I did the same whilst playing netball a couple of weeks ago now. Made a hideous cracking noise. Swelled to the size of a netball and is still purple.

And not broken. Not even a smidgeon. Husband (radiologist) even brought a copy of my x rays home to prove it to me.

Rest it, elevate, ice, pain killers and try to walk normally on it.

Empathy in large measures over here. Sprains can hurt just as much as breaks - you just don't get the sympathy of being in a cast!!

Ahh thanks ladies, I did wonder if it was fractured but im sure they cant make a mistake like that. I found it strange as the lady doing the xray took 2 pictures then told me she was done and then 5 mintues later called me back to take a further one.

I have just put a couple of support bangages on it which the nurse told me not to do but it feels alot sturdier with them on.

Thanks

Nah - I have just put my tubigrip back on today as it feels more comfortable. Plus I am hoping to do a fair amount of walking on it so pre-empting the swelling.

They may have done a further X ray if the first ones weren't in the right plane. I thought I saw a fracture on mine (loooooong time since I did A&E!) but was told "no - they have just rotated your ankle - it is the plane it is taken in".

Well Im bringing this back up again. A week on, ankle still very sore and looked at it tonight and still quite swollen. Should I go back to doc or is it just healing?

DP did this (though it was a loud popping noise) and he has ligament damage which does not show on X rays. He has now been out of work for 2 months as he still has a lot of pain and movement problems.

I would go back as a precaution. These things vary hugely in healing times and your GP will let you know if any other treatment is needed. DP is waiting for physio and you may need some too if the pain carries on. Good luck!

I was thinking about physio today, I am having physio on wednesday for shin splints so maybe she will look at my ankle then and do something to it as it's affecting the whole of my lower leg now.
