Cradle cap back again

Hi! My DS had REALLY bad cradle cap when he was 3 months old. His whole head looked like a crocodile skin handbag. Anyway after 3 months we managed to clear it.

He is now 1 and has a lot of hair but this morning I noticed a patch about the size of 50p on his head. Now I know its not supposed to be harmful but I'm really upset because I thought once it was clear it would not come back and as it was chronic before I'm worried what it will do to his hair if it spreads like wildfire again.

Has anyone had experience of a second bout with their LO's and was it as bad as the first time?

My dd's have both had it a couple of times, dd1 is 2.6 and has had 3 lots, dd2 is on her 2nd and she is 10 months.
theirs was both pretty bad but i spent a few days massaging in baby oil and then combing with a nit comb and that cleared it. they both have masses of hair so the normal stuff gets soaked up!

Yep, ds2 had it bad too when he was little. Has had a couple of recurrences since. TBH I've just ignored it and it seems to have gone away. So long as it doesn't look like its spreading again or annoying him I'd leave well alone.

Yes, I too massaged oil in to it then brushed it in circular motions with a baby brush then washed his head with baby soap. I did it again about a week later.
From there it got less and less and just dissapeared by itself.

Unfortunately it does look like its spreading. HV told me it would not come back after the first time grrrr!

Another HV pearl of wisdom

Out with the olive oil then remember its not harmful to bub, it just doesn't look nice

Also, make sure you wash their hair with clean water.

My dc's cradle cap improved immensely after I stopped rinsing their hair with bath water that had baby bath in it

When it occurred, HV recommended various oil and oil based products, that just seemed to aggravate it. I smoothered my son's head (well the top of his head as he had cradle cap monk style) in bepanthen cream for roughly 20-30 mins, then gently wiped it away. It immediately looked better, and within a week had new hair growing. That was nearly 3 years ago, never had a problem since.

Best of luck to you!
