Has anyone conceived whilst using the Copper Coil? (sorry if TMI)

My period is usually like clockwork on a 21 day cycle. Around the time I was expecting my period, in fact, a few days earlier, I had a slight pink red strained tinted discharge. It lasted a day and a half. Then nothing. This was two weeks ago.

I guess the best thing to do would be buy a pregnancy test and get it over with, so will go to the pharmacy on wednesday when I am in town next.

Have no practical advice to offer except

Do you feel pg?

Report
QuintessentialShadows · 28/07/2008 23:01

no. I havent had time to think about that.
It only occured to me now, that I am looking at my calendar (I write down the first day of my period. Old habit) that I am realizing something is not right.

I know of a couple of people who have got pg with a copper coil in. I think it happens if the coil isn't inserted properly at the beginning or if it's dislodged by an over-enthusiastic smear, for eg.

If it's unlikely to be either of those then there is still a 1 or 2% chance that you can get pg.

Could there be any other reason why your period is AWOL?

Sympathies, I'm guessing from your post that you're not trying to get pg?

No. I am not planning on conceiving, not with the coil still in place though.

Having said that I would be heartbroken should I be pregnant - I reckon it would not be viable?

It maybe the stress of all the house stuff that has made you late....only way to be sure really is a pg test...any way you could get to a pharmacy tomorrow and not Wed?

Would be tricky only because I have promised the boys a trip out to a local fjord, for a walk along the shore, then climb up the hills to look for how the blueberries are progressing and try out DS1s new fishing rod from the pier.
I might be able to do it on the way...

The people I know (in person and mothers/friends of friends) have all had successful pgs. I think it depends on the stage of pg and position of coil/embryo whether they take it out or leave it.

Is it worth saying try not to panic until Weds? [sympathetic ]

are the strings still there? My understanding of the coil/pregnant issue is that if you get pregnant with it in then you have a higher risk of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy but if the pregnancy stays then the baby should not be harmed in any way by the coil.

It is possible to have both baby and coil in?

Shivers down my spine.

I have a very "stick my head in the sand and pretend it is not there" relationship with that blardy piece of metal. I am finding it very hard that there is something artificial inside. It took months to even think about the coil without feeling sick and starting to shiver.

Can I have it out and at the same time preserve a possible pregnancy?

I cant bring myself to "fish for the strings" The mere though freaks me out.

Perhaps a coil is not for me. It has been there since May 07, I have not even had the guts to go on my annual check up....

Can you get dh to subtly check at some point while you're doing it? I hate checking mine, so dh does it for me. I don't notice and he tells me later that they're still in situ!

I'm not sure of the particulars of pgs with coils in but it is possible and sometimes safer than taking it out, which can dislodge the sac and cause mc.

I wasn't told I needed a check for mine, they just popped it in and said 'see you in 10 years' basically. The nurse comments when I have a smear but that's it.

I got pg with a mirena coil

tis OK

if you are then they can either leave it there or take it out (queue v young consultant that had seen at least one baby bring copper coil out in their hand)

as long as it is not ectopic (more a possibility with mirena I think) then

congrats!

NSF, I've heard that too but wasn't sure if it was true or an urban myth.

Looking on the bright side, it's like free entertainment for them, isn't it? My First In Utero Toy .

If you haven't checked it's there then maybe it isn't ? Which would explain the pregnancy if you are up the duff and also relieve your mind regarding removal.
I hope you get the result you want anyway.

How could it NOT be there? Would I not realize if it came out?

Packing up to go fishing with my sons.

I wish I could share my concern with dh, but he is in India. And I dont want to worry him uneccesarily as he has a very stressful time atm.

I might be able to catch the chemist on the way home. Part of me wants to delay this as long as possible, either my period will come, or my dh gets home. If I have a positive test now, I will HAVE to share it with him, and it really is not the best time....

I have a funny pain in my buttocks. Reminds me of the pain I had when I thought the coil had dislodged and I got a ultrasound to check it out.
