Can a doctor prescribe something for nerves for a one off occasion ??

Just that really. If you know that you will get so nervous that you might faint or be sick, can they give you anything to take beforehand ?

Yes - you can get betablockers (sp?). I used to have them before exams

yes. Depending on the circumstances etc, but beta blockers are sometimes prescribed for one-off situations like this. worth asking.

Thanks

Will I have to really really convince my gp or is it something they more or less readily give out ??

I take it the beta blockers slow your heart rate down ?

Obviously they don't hand them out like sweets.

If you are genuinely anxious then I think GPs are reasonably happy to let you have them as long as there is no medical reason they would not be suitable for you. You will probably need to explain why you're nervous and how it makes you feel.

Depends what for I suppose. I get four valium from the gp before I get on a plane because I hate flying. Get panic attacks, the works. They don't take away the worry completely but they do stop me from scaring the shit out of everyone else on the plane with crazy sense-of-impending-doom type rantings.

I am being bridesmaid in August, and I am absolutly terrified.

I have little - no confidence at all at the moment and this type of situation is that last thing I would willingly do, but I am not about to let my friend down.

To make it worse, I have to walk down the isle first and on my own.

I know I will get myself in a state. Just the other day I was nervous because a woman was coming to view my house, and my heart was racing that fast that I felt sick and very aggitated.

The wedding is 100 times bigger a situation than that.

  • does your friend realise you feel like this ?

You're not supposed to drink alcohol with Beta Blockers though ..

She knows I am nervous tilly, but not to this extent.

The no drinking will be a bit of a pain though.

x post... Would a few glasses of champagne and a sniff on some Bach's rescue remedy not do the trick instead ?

I'd had wine before the viewing the other day, it definatly didn't help.

It doesn't matter how much I tell myself that there is no reason to be nervous, I just cannot help it.

Believe me, i'd love to not give a toss about it.

Have you tried Bach's rescue remedy ? Herbal thingy (from Boots etc.). Worth a go ?

I did try it a while ago and didn't feel like it made any difference tbh.

Would your friend let you go down the aisle after her if you explained how nervous you are about it.

I know it won't help (I've had anxiety problems and it doesn't matter what anyone says) but all eyes will be on the bride (and groom to a certain extent). Can you do something to take your mind off it a bit ? Looking after any little flowergirls/bridesmaid etc.

All of the bridesmaids are going down the isle before bride. Me first and then the other four in two pairs afterwards.

There are no little bridesmaids unfortunatly.

My friend did suggest that she'd change it to the pairs first and then me, but I could tell that, that wasn't how she really wanted to do it. I am the smallest and so she really wants me to go first.

I am going to do it, I'm just not sure how I am going to cope with it.

It just seems a shame that "symmetry of bridesmaids entrance" is more important that you being petrified about it (nothing against your friend because it doesn't sound like she's pushed it, just that you're too nice to press her a bit). Most aisles could squeeze three - maybe you could go in between one of the groups of two

I know this isn't the issue but if its something that would make you feel a little bit more relaxed ......

That would take too long to organise Cod and tbh I cannot see it helping.

In my head I know nothing bad will happen, and I know I am being silly, but when it comes to it my heart races like it will explode and I feel shite.

When the woman viewed my house the other day, wtf did i have to be nervous about ? Nothing, but I felt really ill by the time she got here. Once she arrived I calmed down, although for some reason I went bright red and felt really hot.

what time does your pal get married?

When I was 'chief' bridesmaid, it was so hectic and there was so much to do that I literally did not have time to 'think' about the walk down the aisle.

I had a couple of glasses of champagne which seemed to get me into a flow of things-

Think about it Em- it will take you about 10-20 secs to get down the aisle, and in all honesty- the guests wont look at you for that long, they will catch a glimpse and then crane their necks at the door, eagerly awaiting the bride.

Social anxiety is a bugger- google it and see if there are any coping mechanisms on the net.
