Broken collarbone in 3 year old

Our 3 year old DD broke her collarbone last night. Any advice, tips, experiences you could share would be gratefully received. Finding seeing her in pain particularly traumatic. TIA

Aw, sorry to hear that. DD broke hers at same age . I appreciate how hard it is to seem them in pain. DD had her arm in a sling to limit mobility, Drs said let her take it off when she's ready. She was through the worst of it after the second night. Hope sames's true for yours. Keep her on max dosage of painkillers for her age.

Thank you! Thank you! Getting her off to sleep tonight was a nightmare! We have her sleeping on a beanbag to try to stop her turning over. Dr said to take sling off at night but she wouldn't let us touch it. I pray she will be over the worst of it soon. Thanks again for replies xx

DD1 broke hers when she was four. Fell over after running down a hill, went pale, complained of sore shoulder. Appeared to recover within an hour, but was complaining again 24 hours later at which point we finally got round to taking her to hospital

It was painful for three or four days, but much less so once it was strapped up in a sling. After that, it eased off quite a lot. She lived in the same pyjama top for a couple of days, because it was too painful to take it off. Then graduated to tops with very wide necks and/or buttons.

After a few days, she had got used to doing things one handed and just got on with life. Had a fracture clinic appointment after a fortnight, at which they said it was healing OK and to take the sling away after another week (so three weeks in total). When the lump has completely disappeared from the bone, it's properly healed.

During the last week, she just used the sling at school and when she was doing anything relatively active (made her wear it in the garden so she didn't absent-mindedly go up the climbing frame ). She was the centre of attention at school and enjoyed lording it over her classmates, but was mildly annoyed that she couldn't go swimming with her sling on.

We still have the sling in her dressing up box and her X-ray on CD (were lucky enough to be near a high-tech hospital when it happened!) Her two year old sister plays doctors with the sling and annouces that everyone has "broke der toya bone"

DS broke his about 3 months ago now.. THere's a little bump where it healed.

He was in apin for four or five days, managed with calpol, had trouble sleeping as would roll over and it would be painful, but as he's 5 he probably managed it better than a 3 year old. Your poor DD

Children do heal quickly though.

She was playing on her brother's cabin bed and fell off. She went to bed fine and we only took her to hospital 3 hours later when she woke up in agony.

She has just got back off to sleep after rolling over onto front again. Think it is going to be a long night!

Would a rolled up towels or a quilt tucked down each side of her help her to stop rolling over. (like they do/did for prem babies in hospital)

I broke mine aged 20.
sleep propped up on pillows.
regular regimented painkillers. Slip a syringe in if she is not awake. As pain inhibits healing as you guard the injury more. My mum set alarms to administer my pain relief.
it does heal quite quickly, lucikily
I can tell the weather with mine, get a gentle ache pressure when wet warm weather is due!

aww ..poor little thing ..my DD1 broke her collar bone when she was the same age playing ring a roses her little friend ..fell over and that was it! You sound like you're doing brilliantly and it will ease up after a few days ..then it'll be stopping her doing stuff to give it a chance to heal properly ..mine was discovered at the top of the climbing frame!! Hope she feels better soon.

hello all.my 3 year old has fractured his collar bone yesterday but point blank refuses to wear his sling. i've tried pinning a scarf together and making a sling but he refuses to wear it and says it hurts. i'm going out my mind with worry case it doesnt heal correctly as he keeps slightly moving it. any ideas what i can do? i've tried bribary with sweets, money and even toys r us. lol. nothing is working. HELP x

My ds broke his aged 2 by falling off the radiator he promptly took off his sling in hospital whilst the nurse was telling me it's ok if he doesn't wear the sling! I was told that they automatically compensate so I didn't worry too much. Dosed up on calpol etc etc and he was fine.

My ds broke his collarbone last year when he was 2. He was on calpol for a week and also refused to wear his sling. I fortunately have an older ds so we were able to put my 2 yr old in age. 5 tops which helped a lot with getting dressed. Probably worth buying a cheap packet of large tees somewhere. It healed fine and within 3 weeks he was back to normal.

When I was three I broke my collar bone I’m not going to say my age but I’m younger that 16 and for me it makes my arm hurts sometimes but I’m not trying to scare u at all but if u ever think thy she’s hurting get attention better be safe then sorry
