Hot baby, what to do??

Sounds like an exciting steamy thread title doesn't it??
But it isn't
DD is poorly ... I took her to the docs this morning as her temp was up and she has been off her food and grizzly for a couple of days.
No infections anywhere (according to the doctor) and he says it is viral. So throughout the day she has got hotter and hotter. 39.4 at 5pm. I have given her paracetamol and she is asleep in her cot and is still burning up (39.3 ... I have one of those ear thermometers). It is 9.56pm here now.
To be honest this is the first time she has had a high temp (she is 11 months) apart from a virus at 8 weeks and we were in hospital with it and I have forgotten what to do
Should I wake her for some paracetamol at midnight (she had her last lot at 6pm)?
She is in a light short sleeved, short legged all in one vest with a grobag ... should I take her out of the grobag? It is summer here now but it isn't a heatwave or anything ... but warm.
DH says she should be out of the grobag but if she is free of that she gets caught in the cot bars ... and I am worried about her getting cold in the night.
Should I call the doctor as 39.3 seems very warm????????

Have you given her ibuprofen as well? That is very good for bringing temp down. Also, what tog grobag is she in and how hot is it where you are? BTW I am not a doctor but my DS had a really highg temp over Xmas a couple of times but it did go down very quickly after the ibuprofen and certainly didn't last into the next day. Hope someone more helpful comes along soon

Take her out of the grobag immediately and sponge her down with tepid water. Put her in a vest. Please report back

She is in the 2.5 tog one (I think) ... but it doesn't seem that thick.
I will unzip it now as her room does seem quite warm.
Should I wake her for the Ibobrufen? I do have some of that.

I would just keep an eye on her. You can give infant ibrufrofen (sp!) ie. neurofen, as well as paracetamol (I always find it works better to reduce temps anyway). Personally I wouldn't wake her up, I think sometimes they need to sleep it off. 39.3 is hot but just keep an eye on it, it may well come down. I think I probably would take her out of the grobag -can you nip back in later and put a sheet over her or sometihng?

Hi Ghosty. I would definitely take her ot of her Grobag and just leave her in a light sleaveless vest or even just a nappy. If she has a high temperature I don't think that she will get cold.
My Ds had a temperateure of 104 (not sure what that is in celcius) a couple of months ago when he was about 11 months. I called the doctor and they said to keep giving him Calpol and to pat him with a damp flannel to keep his temperature down. I was worried about him having convulsions because I know that is one of the things caused by a high temperature.
I would just keep her as cool as possible and if it doesn't start going down then call the doctor to put your mind at rest.
I hope she is ok.

Right, just checked her temp again and it is 39.7 so I unzipped the grobag and took her arms out. She then began to wake up and I managed to get 5mls of Iboprofen down her. Poor thing didn't even complain she feels so rotten.
Serves me right for not stopping her from drinking out of my friends baby's cup the other day (my friend rang a couple of days ago to say that her DD was poorly so I have been expecting this )

Agree with everyone, take her out of the Grobag and just keep an eye on her. I wouldn't wake her either I don't think, but if she wakes when you take her out of it and it's 4 hours since you last gave Calpol then I'd give her some more. temp converter here 39.3 is 103.

if it's any consolation my ds just had a viral thing where is temp was around 39.8 for about 24 hours, it was horrible but it did come down after calpol and nurofen.

God, I hate it when they are poorly. She is ill so rarely ....

Ghosty, I know the feeling, you get used to them being able to tell you what's wrong when you've got an older one don't you? I think I'd take her temp in half an hour or so and see if it's going down, it should be I think.

ghosty as long as you keep her stripped down right to her nappy then just drapa a sheet over her and continue to give her the ibuprofen and paracetamol....depending on how old she is you can give 5mls of ibuprofen 3 times a day and either 5 or 10mls of paracetamol 4 times a day...it is horrible DS had a really high temp of 40.9 a couple of months ago and it was a nightmare...the good thing is the ibuprofen worked wonders and within a little while the temp brok and he started to sweat...which is a good sign...but not if its cos they r wrapped in 20 layers

Thought I would report back.
Had a mixed night with DD ... she woke and cried every 1.5 hours or so, but didn't need much, just a cuddle ...
She was much more perky this morning but refused breakfast and then declined quickly after that. She has eaten NOTHING all day, refused everything but has had her milk. She has even refused water.
Her temp was normal at lunchtime and then by teatime was high again.
I had to go out this evening for work and had a panicked phone call from DH saying that her temp was 40.8 ... he gave her ibobrofen which she then threw up along with her earlier bedtime bottle ...
He gave her paracetamol after that and now (10.15pm) she is sleeping (very restlessly) in her cot.
I have tried to take her temp but she keeps waking up so I have no idea what it is now.
She is in just a nappy.
I think I will take her to the doctor tomorrow morning ..........
Poor baby, she has been so miserable today!

poor youu and baby. i think if i was you i would just give her regular paracetamol for the temp (every 6hrs) and keep her cool, as you are doing. have you given her a tepid spong-down? that can help too. i think they say dont worry about not eating, as long as baby is taking fluids (which i presume milk is counted as)

have you tried alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen? I find it works much better for very hot kiddies.

Yeah Lou, that is what we did last night ... but I don't know whether to give her more Iboprofen this evening as she threw it up before.
I wasn't here, so I don't know how much of it she chundered but DH reckoned it was the whole amount ... but what if she did take in some and then we give her more ... will that be an overdose??

My DS threw up after ibruprofen....then his temp went down (although still poorly)
Really feel for you as it sounds just like what we went through a few weeks ago. It took about 10 days for my DS to get over it

I remember asking about the throwing up thing when mine were smaller and sick. The doc told me that if they were sick within about 10 mins of taking it then give another dose, otherwise it will have got into the system. Don't take my word for it!
