Ouch - I stepped on a nail

I was clearing all sorts out of my garden and I stepped on a nail. It went right through my boots and into my foot. It bled a little bit so I sprayed Savalon on it and put a plaster over it. I have a major phobia of needles and I know I am not covered by tetnus. (There is a very small chance that I did have a tetnus 6.5 yrs ago). If it is going to get infected, how long will this take. Also, what can I do about the pain? It is so hard to walk on, I actually want a pair of crutches but DH just laughs! I know I am a big wimp, but unless you have ever done it, you can't know how painful it is!

Ouch. You say you don't like needles?? You should get it checked out and have an updated Tetanus if the doctors says it requires. Don't want to scare you but you could need more than a needle if you don't get it checked. xx

I will phone the Dr's in the morning. I did try to phone them today but they were engaged for over an hour (honest, I did try!)
I keep spraying the savlon on it, the wound looks as if it has closed already, but it feels very bruised. I'll keep my fingers crossed that I am already covered by a tetnus. When I have needles, I cry and pass out !

I did this when I was about 10. My brother and I were dissassembling a rabbit hutch and ouch I stood on a nail.

It took ages to heal and I had to have a tetanus jab as it was a rusty nail.

I also had a lump in my foot at the injury site for about 15 years

I really do hate needles, when I had DD and DS, I had c-sections. That part I didn't mind but when they tried to take a blood test, I really went into one!
I am trying to convince myself it will go away by itself. My MIL looked at it and she thinks I might get away without a needle, or maybe she is just saying that to makeme go Dr's and once I'm there they might make me have the needle?
Why do I have to be so scared of injections

The nail I trod on wasn't rusty. It has been holding a poor excuse of a shed up for God knows how long but it was definatley shiny silver! Does that make any difference?!

kid- try and think that one little injection now is better than any treatment you could end up needing if it goes septic and you end up with lock jaw

doesnt have to be rusty, sorry!

Right - I have decided that first thing tomorrow, I will go and put my name down for the Dr to phone me. I can check if I am covered and if not ask if I need to have a tetnus. If the Dr says I do, then I will get it done tomorrow. Might not be able to get online after though if I have a sore bum

you will probably be told to get one. i really think you should get it done tonight. tetanus is serious

Report
kid · 11/01/2005 22:42

I know tetnus is serious, I didn't think my wound was that serious though. I have never done anything like this before so I have no experience. I will go and see a Dr in the morning. I was meant to be going out but that can wait till Thursday. I'm going to be brave. I'll have to be really, I have to take DS (2.9) and DN (1.1) with me to the Dr's.

It's not how bad the wound is that counts. It's the soil i think?

sorry didnt mean to nag. really sorry. hope you get on ok at the docs, let us know. its hard having to take children with you the doctors, they can hold your hand if you need a jag tho.

I don't feel that I am being nagged. I really do appreciate the advice. I told DH, in-laws and my parents and they are not really sympathetic! Not that I'm after sympathy!
I will let you know what the Dr says.
If I hadn't got this replies on MN I probably would have just left it but been secretly worrying like mad!
So a big THANKS

Well, I've been to the dr's and I was very brave!
She said it didn't look infected but I should have the jab just incase. I told her I usually pass out and cry when I have injections so she got me to lay down. I didn't pass out but I did cry How pathetic am I?!
I'm covered for 10 years now, it didn't really hurt but I still don't like needles and I bet I don't get another booster done in 10 years time either!

Well done . Lock jaw and tetanus are much worse than a little jab.
