You can get a treatment over the counter in Boots nowadays, I can't remember if it's a pessary or a pill, plus some cream. However, if you've not had it before, might be best to see your GP first if you can (not easy on NYE!).

As Christmassbee says, live yoghurt is an excellent home remedy (relieves the itching, I've never tried to treat just with yoghurt though).

It's no biggie, even though I know you must be horribly uncomfortable right now Hope you manage to get it sorted out today. Best preventatives are not wearing tights, so the air gets a chance to flow around your bits, cotton pants obviously and not using perfumed soaps or shower gels.

How spooky - I was going to post about thrush also. THe complication with me is that I also found out this morning that I'm just pregnant - took the test to check before using canestan because you can't use that if you're pregnant or trying to conceive. Live yoghurt it is then. Yuk

Congrats pooka! Are you sure about Canesten? I checked with Miriam Stoppard (not in person, her book!) and my NHS book, and they both say that the doc can treat with anti-fungals. Maybe different ones during pregnancy, though - I can imagine the pharmacist not wanting to prescribe over the counter.

Pooka, I used canestan when pregnant but it must be the cream, not the tablet that they have just launched that you take internally. The cream-filled applicator is more effective and more comfortable to use than the old pessaries. Also eat loads of live yoghurt, much nicer than the other way of using it and avoid tights, scented bath products and hot baths. One reason that it's hitting people now may be the amount of sweet things eaten over Christmas as sugar 'feeds' it, so cutting it out may help. HTH

I am ttc and am just geting over an attack of thrush. Boots pharmacist said Canesten cream is fine when you are ttc or already pregnant, but not the tablets or pessaries. I found the website embarrassingproblems.co.uk helpful for ideas about treating it: am also taking acidopholos supplements (from health food shops)

if you get itchy down below then use the cream and smear on the outside (it is a relief) and you can also have salt bath if the itchy is really itchy !! dont wear tight bottoms as you need the air to flow thru the downstairs dept !!

Thanks everyone! Hurrah for being able to use the cream rather than dousing myself in yoghurt. Oh dear about the sweet things

I'm 34 weeeks PG and have dreadful thrush (I think from taking too many hot baths with lots of lovely smelly stuff). I'm using the cream (that's all I was given on the prescrition from my GP) 2/3 times a day. When should I notice an improvement? I've already noticed a slight improvement in the itching but the discharge is still gross.

I think the pessaries are not allowed during pregnancy. Eating lots of bio yoghurt is a good preventative measure. Until then, a midwife told me the you can dip a tampon in live yoghurt and insert. She said you have to do it quicklyor the tampon spreads out. Sorry if this is gross, but if it was me I'd do anything to eliminate the itch. When pregnant I eat lots of bio yoghurt and this keeps the evil things away.
