Hiya

My son is having this operation tomorrow morning and he is 20 months. I'm not looking forward to it but i have been told he will be a lot better for it. It helped knowing that lots of other children his age are having the operation. We are hoping he will be out in a day. I got some good advice from other mums when i posted my message on the 9th Dec

Good luck and it will be absolutely fine. That's what i'm telling myself

Oh good luck for tomorrow Emmaob. Let us know how you get on, will be thinking of you. onlineid, this is a possibility for us in 2005 (dd is 16 months) too. We are waiting for some repeat audiology tests before our specialist finally decides. Emma's thread was very helpful for those of us looking at this prospect...

My two boys had there tonsils and adenoids out in Aug 03 when they were 6 and 4, my sister's DD had hers out earlier this year just before her 3rd b/day. All went well - mine were out in less than 24 hours and were sitting up eating toast in less than 3 hours of having the op. It doesn't take very long - about 40 mins. Will be a little sore but they provide lots of pain relief if needed.

The tonsils are our immune systems first line of defence to tell us that our immune systems are low, manifesting in tonsilitus etc. If removed illnesses can then get deeper and worse and more difficult to treat. The imune system can be boosted very easily with herbs such as Astralagus, vitamins, god diet etc. If you are into this sort of thing then get in touch with a local naturopath or homeopath e.g. from www.babydirectory.com. My DD1 had tonsils/adenoids removed at the age of 5, due to hearing loss, sleep apneoa and to quote the ENT Consultant "severe respiratory disorder". She had NEVER had tonsillitus in her life!

Op went well, up and about and eating the next day. The transformation in her was incredible.

And here we are again with DD2 - also 5! We are seeing the ENT Consultant later today as she also has hearing loss, sleep apnoea but also struggles to eat sometimes due to VERY large tonsils. GP said he had NEVER seen such large ones during his time in medicine. Again, she has never had tonsillitus.

We're seeing the same Consultant as DD1 so am feeling a lot happier this time round as I know the routine/doctor/what to expect etc - and I know the transformation in DD2 afterwards will be for the best.

As for what to expect - very quick op, recovery in children is incredible compared to adults (DH had his done last year and was off work for 3 weeks!). They are encouraged to eat soon after the op. as it encourages healing. DD1 said it was only really painful for about a day after, then it was just a little sore.

My little boy had his op and was out in the same day. It was the worst experience in my life as i was terrified for him but they are so much more resiliant than you think. He was walking around an hour and a half later eating biscuits. Absolutely amazing!!! He's in a little pain now but we are pushing the painkillers into him which is tricky but bribing him with chocolate (after all it is Christmas). We do have another problem now though which is suspected chicken pox. Anyone know what the incubation period is?

onlineid - I'm sure your ds will be fine - I had all these done as a child too and have had no problems.
