Probably a stupid question...

I won't bore you with the details of how I found this in the first place but if you were to put your fingers down your throat (not a great idea, I know) probably as far as you can reach, should you be able to feel anything? I can feel something that feels a bit "bumpy" for want of a better description and wasn't sure if this was normal and google isn't particularly helpful either. Does anyone know? Should I be worried or have I been panicking for no reason?

I'm not going to try it as I've just eaten my tea. Grin

I wouldn't worry about it, it's bound to be bumpy down there! What made you do that?! Confused

Probably your tonsils. Why????

I would throw up if I tried to do that. Have you Googled the anatomy of the throat and tried to match up what you're feeling with the pictures? Also extremely intrigued as to why you were sticking your fingers down your throat in the first place....

Have a look, it may be a ball of plaque, tonsil stone, which will dislodge.

Now I'm getting more stupid...are your tonsils not at the sides at the back of your mouth? This is literally putting my finger down the back of my throat as far as I can (beyond what I believe is called the epiglottis).

I'd been having weird feelings almost as if something was annoying the back of my throat. Anytime I mentioned the feeling of something being at the back of my throat no doctor was interested so had a feel and then freaked out when I could actually feel something.

It’s not your epiglottis, which is further than your fingers, could it be your uvula? It dangles down, you can see it in the mirror.

Adenoids?

Why are you poking around there?

@LIZS hopefully I've explained above now. It was something that was worrying me as for the last few weeks I've just had an odd sensation of something being there and no one seemed particularly interested. I've not asked this exact question as I'm embarrassed and also too worried that I'd waste a doctor's time.

Definitely not the uvula, I knew what that was at least! It's much further down my throat than that. It has made me gag touching it so I'm obviously giving it a wide berth now but was hoping someone would say "it's X, now leave it alone and stop worrying."

Hi CrossFat. Did you ever find an answer? Has the feeling gone yet?x

Sadly no further forward and still have the feeling. I'm really tempted to try and pay for a private GP consultation as I'm so embarrassed that my GP must roll their eyes when I phone as I've had more appointments since November than I've had in the rest of my time at the surgery.

You have tonsils at the base of your tongue, past the other tonsils. .

Get your thyroid levels checked. Might be a goitre.

@Mrsmorton - thank you. Possibly could be that then. Whatever it is feels closer if I stick my tongue out whilst trying to feel down my throat yes, I'm a lost cause

@Danniotley - thank you. I had a full blood count taken early December, would this show a thyroid issue? All that came up was a folate deficiency so I was given a prescription for high dose folic acid.
