Mid cycle bleed

Firstly - so many old threads on this subject but no one seems to follow up with their outcome. Confused I'm looking for reassurance.

I'm 41 we very heavy regular periods and have never had mid cycle bleeding before. It's not occasional spotting either, it's a constant flow needing a pad, just much lighter than a normal period for me. Been going on for 6 days now. Started 9 days in to my cycle.

I'm overdue my smear, I have to have it in hospital with gas and air which has been delayed since March due to Covid. Last smear showed a polyp for first time, but I was told it was normal and not to worry.

Not on birth control or any other hormones. Was tested for perimenopause 18 months ago and hormone levels were spot on then.

I've spoken to my GP over the phone who is referring me to the gyne consultant I'm under, waiting for ablation to treat my heavy periods as it causes anemia.

Obviously Google has me at deaths door with multiple different types of cancer. Does this sound bad? I'm worried but also worried I'm over reacting a bit.

Either you still have a polyp which is causing the symptom of heavy period and spotting or it is low progesterone which is very common in perimenopause . I too spot for 7-8 days before period and was checked last year, nothing abnormal just low progesterone. But you should be checked and even if most causes are benign , it is better to be checked than wondering the worst.

I have this sometimes and it's due to a fibroid. They found it on a transvaginal scan in the end. Defo get checked out just incase.

Thanks for the replies. I'm sure it will be fine, it's just the waiting and not knowing that makes me anxious.

Just a quick update, I'm now on day 8 of this bleed and it's been getting heavier. I've now started with period cramps and a full blown flow as if it were my period. This would have been day 21 of my cycle, having stopped my normal bleed on day 8 and started this bleed on day 13. Confused

Just thought I'd update, in case it helps anyone else who searches this in the future. The bleeding has got worse each day and still continues. My GP only emailed the referral yesterday, and the hospital say the don't have it. Hospital have said unless the referral specifically says it's symptoms of cancer they it will not get listed for an appointment due to Covid.

GP secretary can't confirm what is listed other than urgent appointment request. I've been told by hospital secretary the only other way is to go to a&e but the volume of blood doesn't seem enough for that. It's very heavy now but that's normal for me when it's a normal period.

Just sat in a room at work crying with fear and frustration.

I can sympathize with your situation, hospital should give you an appointment covid or not. Why can't they just give you a phone appointment?
Can you take ibuprofen, if you can then take 2 . Atleast that will take care of heavy bleeding. In the mean time ask your GP to prescribe you mefanimic(sp???) . GP can certainly prescribe that and it will definitely help.

Ah thanks for your reply. I'm a bit complicated as I already taken maximum dose of naproxen and I can't take mefanamic acid. I'm already under gyne waiting for an ablation to sort out my heavy periods as there are no other options for me. But I've literally never had mid cycle bleeding or spotting of any kind before.

I take no hormonal contraception or anything else due to another condition I have, so all the other more usual reasons for mid cycle bleeding are not applicable. And my smear is well overdue. I'm so so worried. But I've decided I will go private if I can't an appointment soon.

Hi whatnow41 - I had similar last year, I bled pretty much every day for nearly 3 months!! I had internal examinations, blood test and a pelvic scan (external) and a transvaginal (I think that’s what it’s called, the internal scan done with a wand like instrument) scan. There was absolutely nothing wrong, nothing on the scans or my tests. I am the same age as you and was told it’s just hormonal. It hasn’t happened since and my periods have gone back to normal, my smear is up to date and perfectly fine too. I too was really scared, worried and feared the worst but I just wanted to tell you my experience to hopefully help you. My drs are still doing blood tests (my sister is having one for something similar) so if I were you I would call your GP and they may just call you in for a blood test. Hope you feel better x

@Hotmess1 thank you so much for your reply. It's just what I needed today. I know it will probably all be fine but I'm just fearing the worst right now. Positive experience is what I need. Thank you.

No problem - I too was in tears and obviously Dr Google has you thinking you’re at deaths door!! Some days it was just a light bleed but mostly it was nearly as heavy as a period, I just could tell it wasn’t period blood (sorry if that’s tmi but it’s the only way to describe it) and it went on for ages. Typically it stopped pretty suddenly the day after my internal scan! Sod’s law! Please try not to worry but do give the drs a call to put your mind at rest x

Just a quick update, I got a call back from the hospital on Friday and they've booked me in for my long awaited procedure. It will be next week. They said that moving me up the list would be the best thing all round as it will give them the chance to do my smear as well as have a poke around. They already had plans for a biopsy.

Today is Sunday and the bleeding appears to have stopped. Doh! Fingers crossed it was caused by stress all along and everything else is totally normal.
