Chronic dizziness

For the past 2-3 months approximately I have had dizziness every single day. It starts usually within an hour of waking up. I kind of ignored it at first thinking it would go away but its gotten worse.

Firs time mom to 8 month old and it is really debilitating at this stage as feel like i can't carry her safely and go about my day to day activities. Any one have any insight or experienced the same? I am getting bloods done this week, just wondering if anyone has experienced this also?

Sorry to hear you feel like this.

Low iron, exhaustion, sinusitis, labyrinthitis...lots of causes.

ElizabethMainwaring · 03/10/2020 10:49

It might be labyrinthitis.
It's to do with your inner ear.
Do you feel sort of sea sick?

I've had this since February, it developed after having some sort of virus. It was really bad for a few weeks then eased off then got really bad again. Now, nearly 8 months later, most days I'm pretty good but do still have bad times where it flares up which can last a few days before easing off. These flare ups are getting less often now though. I think it's all ear related as my ears can pop and crackle sometimes and feel a bit inflamed when the dizziness is bad. I've spoken to two GPs about it, one said labyrinthitis the other said BPPV. Both improve over time.

I do get nausea with mine too but that's improving each time I get it also.

I'ld definitely get bloods done and see if that reveals anything - also look for triggers as to when it happens e.g. on standing, after eating.

I've had all day dizziness after a kidney infection and had nausea with it, had it for about 5 days non-stop and really severe, room spinning, trouble walking. Started getting salt cravings and had big packet of crisps and its finally improving. Think in my case it was as nausea for 2.5 weeks has meant a restricted diet maybe it was low in salt. I've had in past around periods - that can be anaemia or hormones. Ears are also a common cause. Or are you very anxious and not breathing properly?

Would start with bloods and see if that shows anything.

Try stugeron (I think it's called that) and see if it makes any difference. I had an inner ear problem for a long time that caused the same problems. It also turned out I was very low in ferritin though. It brought on a lot of anxiety and dizziness, I really didn't feel myself at all for a long time. Hopefully you can get your iron levels checked.

Oh, I also had low ferritin too. On ferrous fumerate now.

Low iron, low vitamin B12, low heart rate/BP especially at night.

Hi @Mouscadoo... I have just been diagnosed with PPPD. The main symptom is dizziness. Like you, mine starts about an hour after I have got up. This condition was only specified about 5 years ago so there is not that much info online and I would guess that a lot of doctors have not heard of it.

Most people with PPPD find that their dizziness is triggered in 'visual rich' environments such as screens, certain 'busy' patterns or even walking down a supermarket aisle.

Before getting this diagnosis, I was checked out by cardiology, neurology and ENT. The doctor who finally diagnosed me works within ENT but is a vestibular expert. It has taken 2.5 years to get to this point.

Feel free to DM me if you like.

And I meant to say that I am not affected by visual rich environments.

Thanks everyone for your insights. Re iron levels, I was taking them after birth of my daughter but stopped after few months and then when I started to take them again recently I noticed my baby got awful constipation (she's breastfed) so I cant take those iron tablets anymore and I do think they helped.

@dizzydizzydizzy I have never heard of this either but I definitely am sensory sensitive! Get overwhelmed by too much noise and visual stimuli.

@Itwasgoodwhileitlasted I have wondered whether it could be exhaustion, my daughter is an awful sleeper and I am definitely chronically sleep deprived.

@ElizabethMainwaring I dont think I have ever had sea sickness so I cant relate it but its mainly light headed feeling. Will look into labrynthitis as others have mentioned it aswell. Did you have it? Did it resolve itself?

@SilkieChickens definitely not anxiety related! Very much just something physical going on.

Hi again.
Yes I did have it. It was treated with a type of mild sedative, I can't remember what it was called. It went in a day or two
Tbh I don't think that it is labyrinthitis.
You can't keep your balance, it was a struggle to walk at all. You feel like you've got water sloshing about in your head.
It's something to do with the inner ear.
Hope you get it sorted soon.

Can you describe your dizzinesss a bit more?
I was anaemic and during bad periods I be dizzy if I stood up and even if i was sat down at the table I would suddenly feel like the rug had been pulled from under my feet suddenly and back again.

Is your BP all right? It could be low, or drop and that would give you the dizziness.
If you can’t take iron tablets have you tried Spatone? This shouldn’t give your baby constipation and it’s still quite effective. The bloods should give your doctor some insight on what’s going on.

I started suffering from vestibular migraine after the birth of my dc. Also known as migraine associated vertigo. Have a look online and see it it makes sense for you. I had brain scans, blood tests and balance tests, nothing else was wrong. It's a diagnosis of exclusion.

I manage mine by staying hydrated, taking magnesium and vitamin d, sleeping well (hard with a baby!) and being kind to myself. It's always there but it's not as severe five years on. I took migraine meds early on but have stopped now.

Good luck, OP. Hope you feel better soon. Ask your GP to refer you to a balance clinic or vestibular expert, which as I said before comes under ENT. These vestibular experts spent a lot of time dealing with conditions that cause dizziness and vertigo. Mine referred me initially to an ENT in my local hospital and I saw a general ENT surgeon, who does not have much expertise in dizziness. Luckily the GP referred me to neurology in a big London hospital and they then referred me to the vestibular doctor.

I’ve got this too. Constant dizziness, worse around my period. Doctor diagnosed it as vertigo. Not convinced myself but trying to stay away from google!

I suffer from Migraine Associated Vertigo, I was misdiagnosed for several years with BPPV, Labs and Menieres. Started about 7 months after birth of my second DD. It sometimes resolves on its own but its best to get it checked out. I had low ferritn so it was dismissed as that for many months and then some wax in an ear. You need to google your area and try to identify a Neuro-otologist and ask for a referral to them or at least someone who specialises in Vestibular issues. Did you ever have migraines when you were younger or visual disturbances. Dizziness can sometimes be a manifestation of a "silent migraine" or "migraine variant" and often there doesn't seem to be much ofa divide between PPD and MAV.
