What vitamins do you take?

And why? And how did you work out what to take?

I recently had a blood test due to general fatigue. First results showed everything normal except low calcium levels, GP prescribed calcium+d3 and requested 2nd lot of bloods to look at parathyroid.

Second results showed normal everything so doc was hesitant to prescribe more calcium+d3.

To be honest, I was hoping that the low calcium explained my lethargy and that there might be a way to feel more energetic.

But given everything is “normal” I don’t know whether to keep taking the supplements or not. A friend told me a whole list of vitamins and supplements that she takes and someone else recently mentioned that they do too.

I didn’t get to ask why they take certain ones or how they knew what to take, and it’s got me wondering about the whole thing...

Seems like an awful lot of potential for messing up your body’s natural stuff!! And how long do you taken them for - forever??

Please come and explain your thinking re taking vitamins!

Spatone for iron and magnesium citrate as a drink. Iron and magnesium are the most common deficiencies, which can cause fatigue, stress and anxiety. Definitely notice a difference taking them.

Vitamin D because I had a solar keratosis and now need to be covered head to toe within SPF 50 on any skin not covered.

no but I live in scotland where there is higher vitamin D deficiency and its supposed to help prevent/make you more able to ward off respiratory infections which can only be good during covid

Non at all. I try to have a balanced diet, mostly home prepared meals, no takeaway trash, very little alcohol, non smoking. I do have a tablespoonful of Greek extra virgin olive oil most mornings,never add salt to meals, and only use sugar sparingly.

At the moment, vit D, folate, b12 and iron, because they were all low end of normal, or deficient. Then vit K and magnesium because they help the vit D.

I do an at home blood test every 6 months because I have issues with fatigue etc, and these are the usual culprits. (And the GP was useless so easier to just monitor it myself)

Its hard to get vitamin d from food alone and depending on where you live and the time of year it is hard to get it from the sun too.

I take D3 for mood and because we really can't get enough naturally, plus it helps with the immune system.

I am middle aged and my hair is thinning so for that I have been taking iron and biotin (it's not made any difference but I just wanted when I go to the GP to be able to rule out iron deficiency) and to help the iron absorb I take a berocca multivit.

I think I do feel less tired since taking iron but of course it's really hard to know because there are many other factors that could have had an impact.

Vit D as that's recommended where I live. And zinc and vit C during cold and flu season just in the hope it makes colds pass quicker.

Iron on and off because I'm prone to anaemia, should really check my haemoglobin level and see if I need to take again.

And I get the chewable tablet versions of all of these as I've noticed that if I have normal pills I tend to forget to take them as I put it off until I'm having a drink, but with chewable I just take them as soon as I see them.

@Paddingtonthebear

Lellochip where do you get your home tests from?

//www.thriva.com

They have different 'packages' of tests on a subscription basis - the site is a bit awkward but you can reduce/cancel the subscript, and pick and mix the tests to adjust cost etc. It's all done by fingerprick, fill a little tube and pop in the post.

Holland and Barrett Super One. It's multi vitamins and minerals. I figure my body will take what it needs and just piss the rest away.

I don't take vitamins in pill form but I add all sorts of weirdness to my food such as chia seeds, goji berries, spirulina, chlorella, turmeric, acai, etc. No idea if that's better or worse for long-term health.

We do have a good diet, but like many others I was feeling tired with a lack of energy. I found the above multi vitamins and take 2 tablets a day and have been feeling a lot better since doing so. This one had all sorts in that I've not found in other multi vits. I wouldn't use anything else now.
