Amitriptyline and alcohol

I've just started 10mg for migraine so I'll be on this for a long time. It's Friday and I want a glass of wine tonight. Am I ok to have both or should I not take it on nights I have a glass of wine? Insert says avoid alcohol due to drowsiness. I can't say I've found the tablets have made me drowsy so far. I don't want to never have a glass of wine again! Anybody else on amitriptyline?

I was on it a few years ago but the only benefit for me was I slept brilliantly on it. Apart from that I felt spaced out, manic and the one time I went out for drinks (had too much though) I passed out. I only took it for a couple of weeks but it made me feel worse.

Am sure there's loads of people who have got on well with it though, it just didn't really suit me.

I take 30mg for migraine and drink as normal. I don't experience any side effects, and I actually find it stops me getting a headache from the alcohol, whereas without it I get a headache if I have more than one drink without having copious amounts of water after each glass.

No idea if that's medically recommended but that's just my personal experience!

That sounds a bit scary! When did it start affecting you like that? I've only taken 3 doses so far. and were you on 10mg too?

That sounds good @mostimproved. I've only had three doses so far so don't know whether to risk it tonight or not! So far noticed no side effects so I hope I'm like you in terms of tolerating it

Ragamuffin I guess it depends why you were prescribed it. Looking back I should never have been put on it. My marriage had just broken up and I was struggling and went to the doctors as I wanted counselling for me and my DS and came out with that instead. Not sure what dosage I was on but I'm sure you will be fine. Like I said, I should never have been on it in the first place. Symptoms started pretty quickly I seem to remember, my eyeballs felt really big and I just felt like I was tripping (or what I imagine a trip feels like lol).

@Dozycuntlaters yes that doesn't sound right, I'm sorry that happened to you! I've been prescribed it for migraine and told it would help with other symptoms I'm experiencing (globus)

Thanks Ragamuffin I'm sure you'll be fine then. One of my colleagues has been on it for years for insomnia and he's ok on it and he loves a drink :)

I take 30mg to prevent migraine and it really helps (hope it works for you too). I started on 10mg and worked up to a dose that massively reduced my migraines. I didn’t drink to begin, as for the first week or two (when I first started on 10mg) it really knocked me out, I was struggling to wake up early mornings. That quickly wore off, and I don’t seem to suffer any issues now when I have a drink on them. I never skip a dose.
The only persistent side effect I suffer is a dry mouth over night. If I wake up in the night my mouth is like a desert. Happy to trade that for the hideous migraines I was having before I started though.

The wine has been drunk. I'm gonna take the amytriptyline - wish me luck!

I take it for migraines and have for a few years, made a huge difference! I do drink, but never more than a couple. My top tip is to not take it too late or you feel woozy the next morning. I try and take mine by 9pm for a 10/1030 bedtime (rock and roll Grin) hope it works for you

I've probably left it too late but I'll update Grin

Hope you're feeling Ok OP! I take 25mg for migraines and I usually have a few glasses of wine over the weekend and I'm fine. I did ask my GP about drinking and he said on low doses it's fine and that the 'no drinking' advice applies to higher doses (ie 100/200 mg) that people could take for nerve pain, depression etc. So enjoy! 😁

I reacted the same as @Dozycuntlaters when I took it. I felt totally trippy and spaced out all the time. I don't remember ever drinking on it though.
Hopefully it works for you op!

Just wanted to update to say I have noticed no difference when drinking wine. I've had no side effects with the amytriptyline at all. Also no migraines yet! though if I do get a migraine I've got some sumatriptan on standby
