Please HELP ME! regarding reflux, gaviscon & carobel!

Hi, I have posted on other sections of the board but no biters so far!

My DD was born in August, one month early, and is now 7 weeks (3 weeks corrected).

She has had lots of reflux symptoms: Vomiting after feed, coughing after feed, gagging, grimacing, pulling up legs, etc.

I went to hospital regarding her jaundice three weeks ago, and the SHO prescribed some gaviscon infant for her, and wrote to GP to ensure repeats.

Since then, she has found it hard to poo, so GP prescribed Lactulose. Some help, but not great.

Health visitor spoke to hospital, who advised stopping lactulose, as in her opinion DD is not actually constipated by the true definition, but merely struggling to pass her paste like stools.

HV recommended changing to Carobel. GP willingly prescribed, but since starting it on Thursday, I have really struggled with it. DD takes the gaviscon beautifully, but with carobel she gags, chokes and coughs. As a result, she is not taking enough to prevent the reflux.

She did a huge sloppy poo today (I presume as the result of the carobel), but obviously I am worried that going back on gaviscon will return us to constipation mode.

Can anyone tell me the best way to get carobel into her, and how much you need to stop the reflux?

I have tried mixing it with cooled boiled water (disaster) and EMB (a little better). I have tried 1 spoon to 30, 20 and 10 mls, all with little success. In addition, I can't seem to get more than 5mls of mixture into her before she gags & cries inconsolably.

Please help!!

I have resorted to gaviscon once more.

Hi There,

My DD2 also suffered with reflux we to were also percribed Gaviscon and later Lactulose, we never tryed carobel so i cannot help with that, but as for the Gaviscon that also made my DD constipated and i found that the Lactulose also made her very windy, so my GP recommended that i reduced the amount of gaviscon gradually, I found that DD managed fine with just half a sachet per feed. And she no longer needed the Lactulose.

Thank you for your reply. I managed to get her to take some carobel from my fingers earlier, so maybe that is the way forward.

Did try reducing gaviscon, but resulted in vomiting baby! Maybe when she is a little older.....
