Infant Gaviscon - DS is now in real pain, really worried

Doc gave me gaviscon for my ds to try we gave him the first dose tonight and since he had it he's been stiff as a board and screaming like he has never screamed before - he's only 6 weeks and i'm really worried, it;s been going on about an hour now. What do you think I should do?

Why did he give it to you? what was the initial problem?

Is he on it for reflux? When did you give it to him? Gaviscon can give babies constipation, do you think that is the problem?

I think you shuld phone NHS Direct for advice. They will ask the right questions and give you the right answers. Have you got the number? Its 0845 46 47

They gave it to him for reflux symptoms, we gave him the first dose tonight but never again. He just did a huge vomit which looked like gel and he has calmed down a bit now. It's horrible to see him in so much pain

it wasn't necessarily the gaviscon which has caused the problem tonight, but to be honest there are better medications your ds can be prescribed for reflux anyway. Try to get your gp to refer you to a paediatrician. I hope he settles down tonight, reflux is a nightmare.

TO BE HONEST it sounds like the reflux not the gaviscon is the problem. Both my daughters were/are reflux babes and they were like this every single day and also had a witching hour around 8pm at night where it was worse until they either pooped or chucked up. Try the gaviscon for a couple more doses and if no joy then I would go back to gp and ask about Carobel, if that doesnt work and he is formula fed ask about enfamil AR formula and referal to gastro.

meant to add did your gp give you the general advice about keeping up right for an hour after feeds, raising bed head as when they are flat it is ten times worse.

He's never cried like this before though and it started about 10 mins after he had gaviscon and hasn't stopped since. I'm waiting for NHS direct to call me back now. He's still screaming

kitty, poor ds and poor you - sounds horrible, regardless of cause. My dd has reflux, which kicked in big time around the six week mark - they gave her Gaviscon to start with, and it did absolutely nothing for the reflux, but did constipate her.

The gel-like vomit sounds like the Gaviscon coming back out, but it may be coincidental that he's in pain tonight (whether its the reflux causing the pain or not). I've never heard of it causing that sort of pain, personally.

I hope NHS direct helps, and I would ask (firmly - I've found some unhelpful GPs on this one) for different meds. My dd is on Ranitidine and Domperidone, and is much better since starting them - haven't touched Gaviscon since.

Good luck, I'm going to be offline now but thinking of you and hoping ds, and you, get some relief soon.

Need more advice please... I've managed to calm DS down and he fell asleep on my lap, then woke up screaming again then calmed himself down. He is now looking like normal again and the crying has stopped and he has just had a little feed. NHS direct called me back and she said I should take him to A&E to get checked out. I think she is basing this on the fact that he was crying for more than hour and doing a cry that we hadn't heard before. I don't think he really needs to go to A & E now that he had calmed down and gone back to looking like normal, but also worried not to go as she recommended that we take him - what do you think?

Kittypower - honestly, I would take their advice and take him down to A&E. Apart from anything else, if you don't take him - you'll just be worrying all night and wishing you had.

I've done plenty of midnight runs down to the hospital which seemed afterwards to be for no good reason but it's always best to be sure in your own mind that everything's a-ok.

Thanks - he is having a big feed at the mo and seems totally calm again. So we're going to see how he is in an hour or two.
