Please can I have some advice on ds and his cold

ok so ds of 11mnths started a cold three days ago - no problem but it has got worse. He was okay just runny nose etc. Though now develpoed high temp ranging between 37-38. He is off all food very unlike ds, he has very runny nose and eyes are now weaping mucus. Doesn't really want to do anything much. Want to be cuddled lots and bf which is making me sore as was weaning him off .
Past two nights he has slept really badly, so have been sleeping with him.

It is just a cold isn't it?

Have been giving calpol, but bought some calprofen and medised earlier after visiting chemist.

Thanks

If his eyes are weeping mucus, it sounds like conjunctivitis. Sometimes you can get a temp with that.

Can you book into see the nurse practitioner at your surgery tonight so you can at least get some eye drops to clear it up?

Calprofen is much better at bringing down a temp than calpol ime but remember that medised has paracetemol so can't give it at the same time as calprofen or calpol. Alternate doses every two hours of either ibuprofen or paracetemol - tepid baths if you don't feel like medicating too much.

Poor you though - can't be easy with the bf and the disturbed sleep. Can you get some help this w/e so you can have a break?

how about sudafed to try and dry up the cold? not sure what age they can start taking it though! and maybe put a few drops of karvol or olbas oil on a muslin near his cot at night to help him breathe

No, no, no it's not a cold.

LOL at boy flu. No point getting drops for his eyes, though as they would only work for bacterial conjunctivitis and this sounds like it's part of the cold. Poor wee thing (& poor you, too).

This sounds exactly like when mine get conjunctivitis and at the same age too. Need to see a doc and get some eye drops asap. They do get it a few times until they become immune but each time its a bit less severe until after a few bouts they don't get it any more.
Go and see the doc, my ds2 gave it to me last year and its really uncomfortable to have, I pinched some of his eyedrops and it cleared up really quick.

I don't think a double dose of calprofen is too much to worry about but why don't you give NHS Direct a ring for advice about the meds as well as whether or not you should get any treatment for his eyes.

They can book you into an out of hours clinic if they think he should be seen by a doc.

Please at least ring NHS direct. conjunctivitis is SOOOO common in small children but needs to be treated with drops. The first time the nursery said that my ds had conjunc, thought 'no, he just has a bad cold' but I rang the doc who was just about to go home, he said yes that sounds just like conjuctivitis, I said shall I bring him in in the morning, doc said no it needs to be treated straight away, he left a prescription at the pharmacy for me to pick up if the pharmacist agreed that it was conjunctivitis.
Get your son seen by a medic please?

thanks, rang surgery as imagination got carried away - they have reassured me that as a one off it will be okay. Though not to give any more meds tonight

Just feel so stupid, i mean I started a meds list so could not do this sort of thing.

Hi LemonadeGirl - just wanted to see how you guys were doing tonight? Honestly, don't feel too bad about the meds thing - it's a common mistake and especially understandable given that you haven't had a good night's sleep in a while.

Hope your DS feels better soon and that you get to have some "mummy" time - sometimes when the little ones are ill, it feels like you need a holiday to get over it
