Blood sugar levels after eating and possible type 2 diabetes /pre diabetes

I’m keeping an eye on my DD’s blood sugar levels and already have the kit for monitoring due to other conditions . She is higher risk for diabetes so out of interest I’ve taken her sugar level before and after food and it was 5.4 before , then 9.2 an hour and a bit after. I know that’s high but is it high enough to be worried and let someone know about ?

Yes. Get her checked as soon as you can. Diabetes can be rapid onset. Sugars shouldn't go above 7/8 at most for non diabetics. Try and be careful with diet until then, watch intake of potatoes, bread, pasta.

Thanks Vic26. Ok that’s worrying, she’s had levels of 5.5, 6 , 7.8 etc since so nothing as bad and I’ve done several so I’d been telling myself it was probably a one off . I will call her doctor and ask for her urine to be dipped .

Levels vary depending on age in children but 9.2 after 1-2 hours after eating seems ok. For children up to 6 years old up to 11 1-2 hours and 6 to 12 year olds up to 10 1-2 hours after eating. If 13 plus it is a littlw up as thats 8.3 1-2 hours after eating.

You should be testing 2 hours after eating. As long as it is back in range by 2 hours later that is OK, sometimes a really carby meal like pasta can take longer to get back in range.

Oh, and its type 1 diabetes that is generally rapid onset and you would expect to see higher figures than that as the insulin producing cells in the pancreas are basically dying off. Type 2 diabetes is the pancreas slowly winding down or not being able to keep up so that is when you would expect to see figures slightly raised (up to around 12) after a meal. When I was diagnosed with type 1 my BG was over 30.

Keep an eye on the 4 Ts which are the signs of T1 high blood sugar - thirst, thinner, tiredness and toilet (weeing more often).

Thank you both too. She’s 13 and it’s type 2 I’m worried about (amongst other stuff ) due to medication she’s on.
I didn’t realise it was two hours after so will try that from now.
No other symptoms, a bit thirsty but not unusually so for the heat.
