General health

Lots of symptoms. Help me figure it out

On Friday evening about four hours after eating I suddenly became nauseous, had diarrhea, headache and a fever. I had eaten lentils. Not unusual for me.

I had night sweats. The symptoms have continued to today. The night sweats stopped after two nights and my fever seems less.

When I have a poo it feels like I've not fully emptied but then I need to go again soon after.

I have stomach cramp and generally feel rubbish. Could it be a blockage? I was eating quite a lot of fibre last week and was having solid poo until this started.

Just been to the loo. Noticed a red fleck about an inch long and thin. I've not rated anything red since before this started. Have only eaten toast, porridge and potatoes without skin

Do you usually eat loads of fibre or upped your intake from last week? Also, do you generally poo once a day? Having a heavy fibre fuelled diet will increase your BM. Perhaps going over board on fibre (that your body isn't used to) & having more BM is making you feel this way.

Could the food have been off?

Also worth mentioning that some people with Coronavirus started with gastro symptoms and as you have had a fever you should isolate for 7 days.

I hope you feel better soon!

@MrsOffy yes normally one or sometimes twice a day. My fibre intake has probably gone up a little recently but not massively.

@HRH2020 no. My daughter ate it and is fine. I am sheilding anyway but did have to visit the hospital nearly two weeks ago

I would phone the GP and get a phone or video consultation. My stepdad had a blockage in his bowel at the start of lockdown which made him very ill but they did surgery and he is ok now. It doesn't totally sound the same but best to rule it out at least

@YappityYapYap yes. That's one of my worries. However, I had brown colour last night. Also last night I ate porridge and this morning it was more grey. But yes. I am still concerned. I am waiting for them to call.

Agree with @YappityYapYap 100% worth getting it checked. Also, as silly as this may sound, try not to get too worked up about it. Feeling anxious & distressed, can make things feel much worse. Good luck, hope it gets sorted soon!

Doctor called. She says it's not a blockage as I would be in more pain and vomiting. BUT I should go to hospital if I do. Fed up. She said to call back Friday if no better. Problem is. When I go, I feel like I need a proper pop after the diarrhea. She says this is normal.

Did she give any indication to what it could be? You say you feel like you need a proper poo after diarrhoea - are you able to do a proper poo after?

I really.prwsses the issue with her. She said I would be vomiting if I had a blockage. She said it could be anything. No I can't do a proper pop at all. She said I wouldn't be able to get either. Only had two very small farts today and that was while pushing out diarrhea. But she said I would have zero farts. My stomach feels full of gas and I'vee been burping

Waiting on some natural yoghurt to be delivered as not eaten today and is supposed to loosen stools. Any other ideas? Obviously I don't want to go mad because of the diarrhea.

Could it be diverticulitis? My DH gets attacks of this occasionally and it causes pain, temp and fever. He tends to get it after eating sweet corn, as that type of thing can get stuck in the little pockets of the bowel (I'm thinking lentils might be similar?)

@yearinyearout I'm not sure. Doctor didn't mention. My stomach feels full of gas bit can't Gary. Is that a symptom?

I was thinking Diverticulitis too, my ex MIL had this & was in agony when it flared up. Tomatoes, strawberry's & anything that contained little seeds (lentils could have the same effect) would cause a flare up. She would experience diarrhoea, fever & feel generally unwell. As @yearinyearout quite rightly said, these certain foods can get stuck in the pockets of the bowel causing pain & various other symptoms.

Do you know if not passing wind is a symptom?

I'm not 100% although online symptoms seem to sound familiar to what you've been describing. Do you think it'd feel better if you could fart?

Maybe try Kefir? Full of probiotics for healthy guys.

@MrsOffy most definitely. It feels like I need to fart lots and need a solid poo but just fluid comes out.

@oldbagface Hmmm.. perhaps trying foods like bananas, cereal & foods that contains carbs to help stop diarrhoea. You can also try over the counter medicines to stop diarrhoea, too. Perhaps then you could do a normal poo & it's feel like you have been able to kind of clear out your system from whatever is causing this awful experience. Just a side not, don't go overboard with carbs as it may have the opposite effect & cause constipation. Neither of which is pleasant. Hmm

Thanks @MrsOffy. I have been having pretty much just carbs since it began. I've even had white bread toast and I hate white bread in order to do just that but to no avail. I've had some yogurt and will have some more. I wondered about having some Weetabix with raisins but that might bung me up more. Wish the doctor had been more help.

Ah, I can't imagine how awful this must be for you. Perhaps give it another 2-3 days, with a higher carb intake (I think weetabix with fruit would be fine) & some rest. If, by then you are not feeling any better & symptoms aren't improving, I would contact the GP again, explain symptoms aren't & haven't improved & see if there's any medicines or natural remedies you could try. Surely a GP would have some idea of things you could try, surprised they didn't suggest anything when you phoned. Hmm

@MrsOffy going to try some chia seeds in milk. Will call doctors tomorrow. I can't carry on like this. Just managed two small farts on the loo.
