Tingling in hands and feet

Hi all,

For the past week I’ve had tingling in my hands and left foot (more in the fingers and toes). It not as bad as pins and needles but noticeable, although the left foot is worse when sitting down and I will then get pins and needles.

Strangely it started after taking St John’s wort, about 5 days after starting. I’ve stopped the tablets (stopped the tablets last Tuesday).

Do you think it’s linked? I also get prickling when in hot or cold water sometimes.

I thought I was getting carpel tunnel in my hands (suffered horrendously when pregnant and steroid injections worked) and it does have the same feelings so I would assume it’s that but it throws me that it is also in my foot!

I’ve started wearing hand splints at night which is helping as my hands hurt badly at nighttime.

I spoke to a lovely dr a few days ago and he said after lockdown he wants to do nerve conducting tests and also test my thyroid and b12! As we are all unsure when lockdown will end and I am going out of my mind thinking it’s MS or something awful and googling constantly, I’ve ordered a thriva test to see if it’s linked to b12, thyroid, diabetes etc.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

To note for the past month I’ve been suffering badly with anxiety (not low moods just anxious especially with health or silly things like being stuck in traffic)!

Thanks so much - Char x

Had it really badly 18 months ago hands and feet ( but sometimes buttocks ) mentioned in passing to GP as I thought it was a menopause symptom . Dr alarmed me by doing tests ( knee tap, muscle resistance ) and revered me for nerve tests . I have anxiety and it sent me into a frenzy ( thinkI may have posted on here convinced it was MS or peripheral neuropathy) Tests came back fine . I booked a series of massages to Sort out neck tension and they sorted it.

It was really odd to see your post as I’ve been suffering the same over the last couple of weeks. It’s been noticeable in my hands when I wake up in the mornings-like pins and needles.

I was wondering about carpel tunnel?? Why would it suddenly start though??

I get this and have for about 10 years. It's definitely related to when I'm hot and cold and I also get in on my cheeks sometimes. I had blood tests and I was low in vit D so took supplements. My vit D is now normal but I still get it. My doctor wasn't that worried and just said to avoid extreme temperatures or I may have Raynaud's although my fingers don't go that white. My fingertips also go numb when I'm cold and I am a generally cold person.

Thanks for your response. It does send you into a panic doesn’t it - google is awful and it’s horrible to have feelings in parts of your body you use so much!

Funny how you say about neck issues, I’ve been suffering with neck pain for a few months now and wondered if it could be related. X

It’s so weird isn’t it and it was sudden for me too, started in my left hand then the next day was in my right hand and left foot!

The hands feel like carpel tunnel but I honestly am doubting it as it’s in my foot too!

I wasn’t sleeping through my hands hurting so much in the night but I’ve been using wrist splints at night and it’s helped me sleep.

Glad I’m not suffering alone.

My anxiety is bad atm and I can feel occasional muscle spasms and twitches from it right now - feel like I’m falling apart! I never had aches and pains before having a child 🤦🏻‍♀️😆 x x

Also, I thought at first it was peripheral neuropathy as apparently st Johns wort can have this side effect. If you dig around the internet a lot of people suffer with tingling from this and it can last for a long time. What an awful side effect x

I had similar a couple of years ago, always on the outer sides of my hands and feet, can't remember exactly what bloods showed, but was prescribed folic acid, and that did help. Also wearing heels for a while helped, strangely!

My osteopaths have reopened for pressing cases -worth considering?

I had similar symptoms and I was diagnosed with vitamin b12 deficiency. I now have a b12 injection 3 monthly and it's really helped.

I had this and was convinced it was due to an iron deficiency because of very heavy periods. I know take supplements (blood tests showed nothing) and all is well now x

Thank you, I’ve ordered a thriva test which will include testing for that!

I’ve not worn heels in months - maybe I’ll start walking around the house in them ;-)

I’m hoping it may be something to do with this and can be corrected! It’s incredible what deficiencies can do to your body isn’t it!

My DH has this and it was Vit D deficiencies. He got a prescription for strong supplements.

Interesting what people have said about B12, iron and Vit D as I started taking them again at the time so they could have also helped. I honestly think my anxiety didn’t help as it acted like a fuel , enhancing my awareness of symptoms and probably making them worse. I also read at the time that anxiety can cause tingling. As others have said it is very common but I know that doesn’t help you not worry

I get something like this on my right arm and hand, it's nerve damage from reading my rotator cough but a trapped nerve can do it too.

Hopefully the blood test will give me some initial pointers. I agree with the anxiety side of things, it does some crazy things to the body! I also fixate on new feelings etc. I sometimes get muscle twitches and over the past few days I’ve noticed it more because I’m stressed and focusing on them, it’s like it fuels them to happen more! X

I had something similar that gradually got worse, mine was caused by bulging (‘slipped’ in lay man’s terms) discs in my neck. Course of physio helped to settle it down.

I have been suffering with a bad neck for a few months now, stiffness, pain and shooting pain in scalp at times so could be related. Will be booking in to see someone ASAP x

Sounds really similar to me. I had an MRI and nerve conduction tests and when I had the confirmed diagnosis I got the physio. That helped massively along with starting on Amitriptyline.

B12 deficiency gave me tingling in hands and feet, and twitching legs at night. I also had sore limbs and felt tired. Burning tongue too weirdly.

I had exactly the same symptoms. I too was worried about either MS or peripheral neuropathy! I also ordered a thriva blood test! Mine came back as low vitamin D and my b12 and folate were on the low side of normal. I took supplements at a high dose (much higher than rda) and my symptoms gradually disappeared. It took about 2 months for them to go completely. Rechecked my vitamin d and it was over 100.

A while ago I stopped the supplements (kept forgetting/not bothering)...and my symptoms returned. Rechecked my vitamin d and it was down to 40.

So I started the supplements again. And the symptoms have gone! I'm sending off another vitamin d test tomorrow and I predict that my results will be back up around 100!

Wow thanks so much for your response, As weird as it sounds, I’m hoping the thriva test identifies a deficiency so that I can get on the right track to making things better.

I also get electric shock type sensations in my head and body and muscle twitches which put me in more of a spin added onto the other symptoms.

Glad you’re feeling better and you found what was wrong! Xx

I had tingling in my hands in December and also convinced myself it was in my feet. It has completely gone now and i had forgotten all about it, though never figured out whay caused it! I was a bit worried about it at the time and had blood tests, though they only identified borderline iron and vit d levels, everything else was fine. I also had a bit of neck ache at the time which may be linked, and I came down with the flu a little bit after the onset of symptoms, so possibility it could have been viral. I was definitely very anxious too which probably compounded the symptoms. Please try not to worry!
