Hi ladies I'm wondering if you could shed some light on this for me. I have just moved to England from Scotland and registered with a gp. I received a letter today inviting me for routine cytology screening for women aged 25+?. I've never had a letter like this before. I'm 28, nearly 29. I read online it is something to do with a smear test which I am up to date with and not due another until early next year. All my smears have been normal so far. Is this just a routine letter? Maybe because I've just registered with a new gp?. Never heard of cytology before in Scotland I've always just had a letter every 3 years inviting me for a smear. Thanks.

‘Cervical cytology’ is the correct medical term for ‘smear’.

Sounds like the smear program to me. Cytology means looking at cells to diagnose a disease, most diagnostic cytology is smear testing.

Thank you, just wasn't familiar with the term as it's different here and wasn't sure why I got a letter so quick as I shouldn't be due a smear until feb next year and that will be 3 years. My last smear was completely normal as had all the others. Maybe it's just because I've registered with a new gp
