Twisted Ankle

Hi , I know I will be advised to go for an X-ray . On Monday I twisted my ankle quite severely , it has swelled so I’ve been elevating it when I can and using ice packs
However the pain has gone and I can walk but the ankle is still swollen . I would have thought if it was broken I wouldn’t be able to walk on it .Im just wondering if any one has twisted their ankle to this severity and how long did it take for the swelling to subside

6 weeks to get really back to normal. If you can walk on it and it has full movement and pain free it's just likely to be a sprain

Course it does depend on how swollen and bruised it was initially. Mine took 6 months, but it was evil.

Thankyou for your replies theres no pain now really , when it happened I felt as though I’d broken it , it’s been four days now & the swelling is just on the ankle itself
I’m just wondering if I should go for an X-ray I’ve never had this happen before

I can move it although it’s a bit stiff

I'd say that if most of the swelling has gone down and you can move it through it's full range of movement with just discomfort, and if you push down on all the bony parts of the foot around the injury, and it's not too painful, it's unlikely to be broken. Putting weight on the foot is very important and if you can fully weight bear it's unlikely there is a break. If you're worried and it's still painful after a few more days, I'd get it checked out. Sprains are painful for ages though!

Thankyou Alexasaymyname, I’m still elevating and ice packing it
There’s no pain when I walk , but is sore to touch the bruising is going yellow which I hope is a good sign . I’ve never had anything like this before & what with the Corona Virus I’m trying to avoid the hospital a few Dr’s surgeries have closed in my area 😩
