Advice for ovarian cyst and sciatica pain

Hi ladies

So it all started 4 months ago with bad and wierd ovulation pain. I say weird because I felt huge pressure in pelvic floor and around tail bone, along with usual ovulation pain. My period started to get longer and longer and heavier.

The pain scared me enough to go to gp next day and she said don't know what u e talking about, ordered some basic blood and tests and sent me home that it cud be just a rogue ovulation.

I was right back at gp the next month with even more severw ovulation and continuous pain from ovulation to end period. She again said let take the copper coil out and let's see. I said I have had coil for 5 years and I am sure it's not the coil. I wrestled a scan from her.

Scan was yet another bad ovulation later and I was on period when o has the scan which showed a clear 3.8 cm cyst on right ovary.

I have shooting groin and hip pain and throbbing in ovary along with bloating and stuff. To top things off I developed horrendous sciatic pain when my this period started.

I was in so much back pain I went back to gp and before saying anything I started crying. She loaded me up with pain killers and said cyst is too small to cause any problems and sciatic will sort itself with pain killers some rest and exercise. No need for gynecologist referral for a small clear cyst.

Today is exactly a week of horrible sciatic pain, can't walk, sit or stand for long. I still have shooting groin, hip ovary pain. And I am really depressed.

I am sure this sciatic has something to do with cyst. Small or not it's pressing on nerve and giving me agony. I m depressed and gp won't listen and I am facing months of sciatic until cyst shrink!!!

Am I going crazy thinking it's cyst or is it random sciatic?

I am sorry for a long ramble but I take it as a way to vent out at a shrink.... Please any advice, experience or anything will be appreciated.

Oh you poor thing. It couldn't be sacro-iliac joint dysfunction along with your cyst could it? I've had both and it proved very difficult to get a diagnosis. There's no cyst currently but the SIJ problems give me awful groin pain, hip pain and pain down my leg. Turning over in bed is agony sometimes. The groin pain isnt dissimilar to the pain I had with my ovarian cyst, and I ended up spending a night in hospital under the general surgeons with pelvic pain, but it turned out to be the SI joint flaring up again. Have also had an injection into my hip for 'bursitis' which did nothing and again pain turned out to be related to SI joint problems.

At least you've had a scan and excluded the worst case scenario. That's the most important thing. Can you self refer to a physio in your area? It might be worth getting checked your spine and pelvis checked out perhaps?

Thanks Geoffrey

I don't even know half the things you talk about but I will look into it. Thanks for the quick reply and I am sorry you had to do through all that. Women pelvis is a complicated thing!

It's just the timings of the back pain with the periods and the cysts and that pressure I felt in ovulation and other times is at the same point I am feeling the sciatic pain.

That all got me thinking about a connection.

Mmm I guess the timing might mean it is gynae related rather than anything else, but worth ruling it out perhaps? Have some Flowers and Wine and hope you feel better soon.

I have no advice but I'm following with interest as I have exactly the same symptoms. Have done for about 2 months now to the point I was worried I was having an ectopic pregnancy (not pregnant)

I have had sciatica for a while but it has got noticeably worse and is now on both sides. I did however have a vaginal ultrasound a couple weeks back for a different matter and they didn't mention anything.

I hope you get some answers soon.

Iswhois, have you thought about endometriosis? I have heard that sometimes endo can cause cyclic sciatica and leg pain if it is present around spine. Do you have other endo related symptoms?

I’m not sure. But that’s based on me having a 25x18cm ovarian cyst and it only hurting severely in the August, and it was removed in the September.

The pain you’re talking about sounds like regular sciatic pain. Exercise when you can as it can get worse when you sit or stand in one position for too long and self refer for physio

I have considered that, and I do have other symptoms (heavy and painful periods, frequent UTIs, IBS) but I have had two transvaginal scans and neither suggested that I have it. I also had a hysteroscopy 5 years ago which didn't pull up anything abnormal.

Like hitting your head against a wall!

I think only laprascopy will pick up endometriosis. You really should follow up on that. It can be a big relief just getting a correct diagnosis.

I'm gonna to to the GP on Monday as the pain is quite bad and I will mention it again

It is rubbish not knowing what is going on inside your own body. I am TTC at the moment as well so really need to know!

Maybe you need an mri I have same the back pain and sciatica is unbearable I’m on meds not touching it, I also have ovary pain on same side, I had a lower back mri so thought if there was a problem with ovaries it would show up they found herniated disc pressing on nerve

Thanks.
I am thinking of yet another doc appointment soon. I will talk about MRI scan then.

I’ve told this story several times over the last few months so apologies if you have already heard it! 🤦‍♀️
Last year I had sciatica pain for over 5 months that wasn’t improving despite seeing an osteopath and having acupuncture every week.
GP wouldn’t refer me for a MRI scan, just said I had to go on a waiting list to be seen at the back clinic.
My osteopath persuaded me to have a private MRI scan at a cost of £450.
The scan showed that my back was in a good state, but it picked up massive cystic masses in my abdomen. I was referred to a Gynaecologist on the 2 week ovarian cancer pathway. After a CT scan and blood tests I was diagnosed with Stage one ovarian cancer.
5 weeks after receiving the results of the MRI scan I had major abdominal surgery where they removed my appendix, had a complete hysterectomy and a hernia repair.
Oh and an ovarian tumour weighing 50lb........
I lost 3 stone in 5 hours!! 😮
The tumour was found to be completely benign 🙂
I’m still having pain in my back and leg, saw the doctor at the back clinic last week and she thinks my hip has been damaged by the weight of the tumour. She said my stomach muscles have been completely destroyed with the surgery and I will need intensive physiotherapy to be free of pain.

Oh my God fudgesmummy

I hope u have a good recovery, but I can't even imagine going through all that and in such fast pace. U must be exhausted. But I am happy for u that it got caught and sorted. Waiting is horrendous.

I can finally walk without a limp today and my period finished yesterday as well. I am waiting to see what happens this time in ovulation and then next period. I'd the pain returns I will sure to hammer out a gynae referral from GP.

But the stupid cyst hurts and gives out shooting pains in groin and hip. Getting tired of it all. I also feel something leaking in abdomen, like when u spill a few drops of water of your belly and the cool wet feeling you get. Makes me wonder if the cyst is leaking with shooting pains??

Was it a low back mri fudgesmummy or a full body one

@Aloneonprecipice
It’s been just over 4 months since the surgery, I had a serious infection in my wound and had to go back into hospital on day 10. It took 13 weeks to heal completely.
Unfortunately I had to return to work after 5 weeks (self employed childminder) and yes I was absolutely exhausted for a long time.
I didn’t have any pain and honestly had absolutely no idea it was there. Looking back at photos it had been growing for at least a year 😮
I hope you get some answers soon

@user1497873278
The remit was lower back.
The young technician told me after the scan that he had taken some images of my abdomen as he wasn’t happy with how big it was.

Report
Aloneonprecipice · 11/03/2020 14:06

The technician was right to take abdominal images. Your before and after pictures are remarkable. Even if one is overweight, doesn't the tummy usually goes flat from top if u lay on ur back? Not be like 9 month pregnancy tummy.

My leg pain has died down thankfully but I am still suffering from tailbone pain. I am so sick and tired of this all.

Was wondering if I should ask for another scan in a month's time. Maybe the stupid cyst has grown and causing more symptoms. As I said, feeling rubbish.

@fudgesmummy Are you all okay now?? I give up on GPs, what did they say to you after refusing to refer and your private scan picking this up?

Would it have progressed if you weren't able to afford a private MRI??

Report
fudgesmummy · 12/03/2020 21:39

@Taddda
The GP who refused the scan was the one I saw after I got the MRI scan results and made the urgent appointment with the Gynaecologist.
She just commented that I had the scan, I wish I had said something but I was in such a panic about her saying it might be cancer that I didn’t.
I would refuse to see her again, I certainly wouldn’t want her to treat me 😡
The consultant or surgeon never really said what the out come would have been if it hadn’t been picked up

Oh, and I’m am completely healed now.
I’m waiting to have some intense physio as my stomach muscles have been completely destroyed by the surgery and the weight of the tumour has caused damage to my hip

Taddda · 12/03/2020 22:20

@fudgesmummy Have you thought about following that up? I think its outrageous, what if you couldn't have afforded to go for a private scan?? Someone else might not have, the outcome of that doesn't bear thinking about!
I'm so glad your doing well now, hopefully the physio will help

Hello...I know this is an old thread but I am suffering from the same symptoms. I was wondering if you have found a diagnosis? Thank you so much.
