Stopping coronavirus

I have a workplace dilemma.

There's a guy in my office who never washes his hands after going to the toilet. It's a big office and, though we've both worked for the company for years, I don't know him so well, though occasionally have had work-related dealings with him.

He's been like that for years. He's nice enough apart from very poor hand hygiene. It didn't bother me much. Lots of guys don't wash their hands very well. I just resolved to try not to touch anything after him.

A few months ago, two younger women starting working with him. I don't know them at all and have never spoken to them. The non-hand washer offers to get them glasses of water in the morning and sometimes just brings them water and they drink it. Bit yuck, but so be it.

But now, with coronavirus doing the rounds, I really feel like I should say something to him, or them. But I am not sure if I should, and if I do, I'm not sure how to approach it.

Given what might be on this guy's hands, you definitely don't want to be putting a glass of water he's touched up to your lips, right?

Or is this none of my business?

Any advice?

How do you know he doesn't wash his hands after the toilet?

If so, it is gross. I had a man violently sneeze next to me on the tube today, without covering his nose or mouth whatsoever. I'm pregnant and wanted to walk away but was too polite to. I feel like we need to make these things more socially unacceptable somehow.

In the first instance could you speak to HR and express your concerns, and ask them to do some sort of staff reminder to wash hands and provide hand gel on all the desks?

After he pees? Or... Envy (not envy)
I guess everyone touches that toilet doors ect, even after hand washing. But still.

Next time you see him start to skip out without washing his hands go 'wash your hands man ffs!'. Make it clear you find it gross. You could add 'I dont want coronavirus because you spread it around the office because you never wash your hands!'.

"How do you know he doesn't wash his hands after the toilet?"

Oh, perhaps I should have mentioned, I'm a man too, so sometimes we happen to be in the toilets at the same time.

The sinks are all lined up together. You have to walk past them on the way out of the toilet. It's pretty obvious if someone doesn't wash up...

Thats grim!! You definitely need the powers that be in your office to do a campaign of emails, signs up and hand gel everywhere - then it will be easier to prompt him to do it. If he refuses he will just look weird.

Can you ask your line manager to send around a nag?
