To be so scared I have bowel cancer

Sorry for posting here but just wondered if anyone could hand hold. I have some rectal bleeding so was sent by GP to have a sigmoidoscopy. I found it incredibly painful even with gas and air. They found a 1cm polyp so now have to go for a full colonoscopy in a couple of weeks time and remove the polyp. I’m so scared. I’m only 44 and have no family history. I keep analysing my symptoms and feel at times like I need to go to the loo but can’t and I know this can be another symptom . Anyone had a similar experience and it’s been ok. I know I need to face the fact that I may have cancer.

I know it's easier said than done, but I always try to assume the best until told otherwise. There is no point, and you'll only upset yourself, working out how to face it and it might never happen.

Distract yourself until you get the results.

Sorry you're going through this op, what a scary time. I do have a positive story for you, a family member was in the same situation as you and had the same tests. He did have cancer, was operated on laparoscopically (so no scarring and a quick recovery) and the cancer was removed. No further treatment, no recurrence. He's been clear for many years now.
I hope you don't have to go through it but there are very many good news stories with this type of cancer. All the best Flowers

You probably don’t have cancer OP even with your symptoms. I know several people who have had bowel issues like you but have been diagnosed with a benign condition. Really sorry you’re going through this Flowers

Don't worry about the colonoscopy it's undignified rather than painful.

I'm 56 and at 55 you're offered a colonoscopy now. Many of our friends are a similar age so have also had one. Only one person didn't have a polyp.

Good luck though, I can understand how frightening it must be.

Hi @thickwoollytights. I have appointment on 10th March so trying to keep busy but still feeling anxious. Thanks for your message @StCharlotte that is reassuring to know. I guess it isn’t something most people talk about.
