6 monthly smear

Hey everyone.

Just need a bit of reassurance really.

Had an abnormal smear last year which was cin2 only a tiny area and had to have LLETZ to remove it. I have just had my 6 month smear last week and am now really nervous about the results. Was told by the nurse that the results go based on HPV now which is worrying me that I still have the HPV. And is there going to be any abnormal cells there. Suffer really bad with anxiety and the wait is making me very anxious.

Has anyone been through this before and had a clear result after the 6 months?

Hi there. Hope I can offer some reassurance. In 2012, i had an abnormal smear, followed by lletz for, much like you, a very small area of CIN2. I was dreading my 6 month check up...so when I got a letter saying I needed another colposcopy, I freaked out! It turned out all it meant was that HPV was still present, but there were no changes. At my next 6 month check up, I was all clear. And have continued to be so. If your check up shows you do have HPV, please don't worry as it might take some time to clear. And we had minor changes so that's an encouraging sign.

I do agree it is very anxiety inducing though, I still get v v nervous whenever my smear is due...

@ColourMeExhausted but don't they test for abnormal cells if you have HPV as well. I'm just so nervous the longer I'm waiting. Just can't help but worry for my daughter. I hear so many positive stories but feel like my anxiety takes over and I can't help but over think things. It's horrible. I'm glad your all ok hun and thankyou so much for the message back.

@ColourMeExhausted sorry forgot to say what do you mean we had minor changes? The CIN? Xx

I had CIN1 lasered as long ago as 1989 (they wouldn’t treat like that now) and still have HPV+ all these years later with no further cell changes. Try not to stress about it.

@LarkDescending are you not worried it will cause issues. How often do you get checked now xx

If I had been stressing all this time I’d have gone very grey by now! I am on a yearly callback for the HPV now that testing is focusing on that, but hitherto have been on the usual 3-yearly schedule with no problems.

@LarkDescending yeah I suppose your right that's my problem I stress so much but think it's my anxiety that causes me to think the worse. One day I could be feeling really positive and then next min I'm feeling really anxious. Worried about getting that letter x

Got my results still got Hpv but no cell changes. Dreading going for another colposcopy I'm hoping they don't find any cell changes. Worried why I still have HPV as well x
