Underarm abscess and now cellulitis:(

Noticed a lump last Friday that got more painful and swollen over the weekend. Went to the doctor in Monday for a 2 minute appointment and he said I had an abscess. Put me on Flacloxcilin for a week. Seemed to get worse over past few days so went back today. Told me it look redder and added amoxicilin to the mix as I have now developed a skin infection too!! Such bad luck! If no improvement by Monday I need to go a&e for iv antibiotics and have it lanced. Trying my best to use heat to get it to drain naturally as the thoughts of having it lanced terrifies me! Its so painful, feels like pain all down my arm and hand. Familiar pain starting in other armpit so praying there isnt another on the way. Has anyone had similar experiences and what was the outcome?

Yes family member had the same but on elbow. I don't want to alarm you but cellulitis is quite dangerous so iv antibiotics is the way to go.
It will sort the infection, don't worry.

I was advised to draw a line around the redness in felt pen so you can see if it is shrinking or getting bigger.

@awishes Thanks! The cellulitis isnt bad at the moment so I will give it until Monday and hope the antibiotics work. The whole experience is so painful and stressful as ive never had an abscess before or a skin infection so it worries me that the original antibiotics didnt work. In praying the combo works for it. Did your family member have their abscess lanced?

@Egghead68 I had read that before. I dont have an obvious red line, just a few red marks that look like scratches but i dont think it hasnt gotten bigger

Hello yes lanced but was so relieved to get rid of it that the pain of lancing didn't bother him. It was a couple of seconds and certainly not agonising.

Had lots of abscesses, managed to get rid of all bar one with antibiotics. Was not impressed.with the packing experience! Hope it heals quickly.

@TARSCOUT Thank you. Packing isn't pleasant at all 😩 Im so paranoid about the dressing coming off all the time too which doesn't help! Finding it hard to get dressings to stick! Plus not being able to have a full shower is really bumming me out!!

When changing the dressing is the small? cavity left by the abscess being flushed out with saline (salt water) before being packed?

If you should have another abscess, apply magnesium sulphate paste to draw it out, flush with salt water (2 teaspoons salt to one quart water) and apply a layer of honey before any dressing.

After I had an abscess on my foot various creams were applied to encourage it to heal, but regular flushing with saline and an application of honey were the only things that caused the wound to granulate and once that process started it healed rapidly.

Thank you. They do flush with saline before repacking each time. I do question the nurse cleanliness sometimes as they put on sterile gloves and then go looking in drawers/bags, etc.

Good grief! They should be putting sterile gloves on after they've rooted around in drawers/bags etc. I suggest you call their attention to that as it's easy for an open wound to become infected or cross-infected.

Please think about honey before the dressing goes on.. Or partly remove the dressing when you get home, apply a thin layer of honey and stick the removed dressing back on - might need a steristrip or two to refix it.

Alternatively, you could ask them to apply medihoney after they've flushed out the cavity or buy some yourself - it's readily available on eBay and Amazon. Fwiw, I used the same honey I put on my toast. Smile

Hi Fairygirl! I had to have the wound packed for around 12 weeks or so. I didnt find the process too painful but all depends on how deep the wound is.! Hope you heal up quickly x
