Please Help! makeup rosacea and skin care

Tasharuby1 · 05/01/2020 17:04

I’ve got an all day event in a few weeks. Since I’ve been diagnosed with rosacea my skin burns and I haven’t been wearing makeup. But my skin is a mess. I’m currently using Cerave Face wash and moisturiser and zz cream in the evening.
I desperately need a makeup that won’t irritate my rosacea.
Any suggestions for skin care welcome.
I’m 47 had great skin until October last year.
Now it’s a mess I have no confidence. I went to the derm at the hospital after 6 months wait and it was a stand in he said try washing your face dandruff with shampoo . I could have cried as my skin is so sensitive if I was stupid enough to try I would have been in even more of a mess.
Please any suggestions???

Watch the facewash,I used that and I can't believe it's for sensitive skin,it burns me and seems to strip my skin.

I use TBS chammomile balm with tepid water and flannel if I need to remove make up but if not then just water.

I use a combination of CeraVe, Aveeno and TBS Drops of Light moisturisers.

Estée Lauder double wear and Lily Lolo powder covers up any redness I have completely. You can get a sample of DW at a counter before investing as it's expensive but worth it.

It's trial and error with rosacea but mine is hardly noticeable these days with the above combination.

I've just googled the zz cream,I'd ditch that for a bit and just used the CeraVe morning and night and see if it helps.

Sometimes I use Head and Shoulders by my nose when I have a flaky flare up,it works well but only a minute drop with lots of water. Again,it's trial and error.

Thanks for the reply .
Mines horrendous and my skin is splitting around my lips .
It’s the Smoothing Cerave face wash which doesn't sting me but it does have Salic acid in but the Cerave moisturising one I couldn’t use. I’ve tried the aloe TBS range but this stung like mad .
Is the balm for ultra sensitive skin ? Is it fragranced ?

The balm is for sensitive skin but it sounds like perhaps you shouldn't be using anything on your skin atm if it's split. I wouldn't use anything with acids at the moment while your skin is having a flare up just moisturiser.

I can't use the aloe face wash either,it's foaming anyway which should be avoided.

My sympathies, it's horrible.
Have you tried all the antibiotics? It took me years but I eventually found one that cleared up the rosacea in the end. I'm free of it now.
I never found makeup I could use but dead sea mud calmed down the worst of it. The dead sea mud mask soap from Boots worked for me - much better than the expensive stuff I tried.

Antibiotics can help. I also started using Cetaphil cleanser and moisturiser. It's very gentle yet quite moisturising. That was the only thing that didn't cause a flare up. It was even better because it didn't require water. Water made my skin worse. I used the Cetaphil to settle my skin down and then was able to use normal foundation

I have found bare minerals powder make up really good; my skin feels somehow cleaner and calmer than with other makeup. Get someone to teach you how to apply it well.

Please ignore all the lotions and potions listed above and go and get some Soolantra from your GP. It kills off the demodex mite which are found in far higher numbers on the skin of rosacea sufferers. I had rosacea for 20, years and tried everything under the sun. Soolantra cured it in a few weeks.
I still wear camouflage makeup as my skin still has a red appearance but all the soreness, lumos, bumos and sensitivity has gone.
Makeup I would recommend in the meantime is Estee Lauder double wear maximum cover camouflage makeup. You only need a little bit, if you go to an Estee lauder counter they will colour match you.

Should say
lumps bumps

Or perhaps don't ignore posters suggestions and read up on Soolantra and you will discover that it works for some people and not others just like anything else. How rude!

Soolantra makes a huge difference for me too. I'm still a bit red on the cheeks sometimes (easily covered with any concealing make up), but the pustules, bumpiness, scaly flaking and spots have cleared up remarkably.

MetallicPaints · 06/01/2020 23:08

All the lotions and potions in the world won't kill off the demodex mite. So that needs to be the first thing the OP tries. No need to get your knickers in a twist Hmm

Lots of things can cause rosacea, there isn't one cause therefore there isn't one cure.

Thank you all for your replies i truly appreciate it. I have just finished 4 months of soolantra. While it helped with the spots my skin was still sore and I have weird circles on my chin. That’s why I’d try the zz cream.
I haven’t tried antibiotics as it was October last year when I was given antibiotics for a stye and then given it for a lump on my nose all and then a water infection ( all I since found out I didn’t help the water infection was a mistake my the hospital) they triggered Gastritis that which resulted in 4 stone weight loss. That’s when I started with rosacea. My guts are trashed. Also started with chronic fatigue and shaking. The thought of antibiotics scares me to death. I think I do have a demodex issue as my blepharitis improved with the soolantra.
But doc told me I can only use it for 4 months.

Sorry I’ve just read that back and it didn’t make a lot of sense (typos)
I’ve tried cetaphil and found the wash too harsh as it has SLS in.
And the moisturiser didn’t quite agree with me .
As for bare minerals I will try to order but not sure which one to try or how to apply. Do they do a foundation or is it all powder ?
I have huge pores due to the rosacea.

Honestly OP I think that cleanser is too harsh for your skin and you are probably damaging your moisture barrier which makes the skin dry, cracked, sore and more red/spotty. I'd try being extremely gentle with your skin for a while and I think it will improve. I'd switch the smoothing Cerave cleanser to the hydrating one (I use this) which Cerave moisturizer do you use? I use Eucerin 5% urea replenishing face cream, but when the weather's cold and I need something extra I layer the Cerave moisturising cream on top (the one that comes in the tub or massive tube)

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/01/2020 09:34

I agree with MustBeThin

Eucerin 5 or 10% is very good ime.

Have you been taking acidophilus as you've had such a bad time with your stomach?

Report
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/01/2020 09:38

I would say that even the CeraVe hydrating cleanser burns when I am having a flare up so proceed with caution but the cream is amazing. I alternate between the one in the tube and the one in the tub. Actually if you're not using make up you could even use a bit of the one in the tub as a face wash but be very gentle,no scrubbing or hot water.

Look up Talontedlex on Instagram. She has rosacea and gives great advice on products that she has reviewed.

It sounds to me that you've got much more going on than just rosacea, and you need to sort out the root cause. Start by taking a probiotic to get your gut flora back in sync. When I first got it, I tried all sorts but ended up using my DDs acne cream, which she got onmorescription, which was a benzoyl peroxide. My spots cleared up within a couple of weeks. I now just have intermittent redness that I use a hint of green base under a light BB cream to disguise. I find that using heavy camouflage type make up just makes me itch like mad!

Wrt Bare Minerals,I would suggest using the matte version as it doesn't contain bismuth which can irritate. Personally I find Lilly Lolo powder nicer, especially as you can order loads of testers but again it's a personal thing and what might work for one person won't always work for another.

Hi, Sorry to hear you have been through so much. I had rosacea and acne. I would loose the salicylic acid. It gave me spots as was too harsh and my skin produced too much oil to compensate. I use Elemis Pro Collagen Rose Cleansing balm. This is life changing for me. I think this cleared my skin of acne and rosacea. It feels soothing and gentle. Elave Skin Balancing Moisturiser 219 which is oil free prevents my spots l think. Lavera Cleansing Milk 2 in 1 is great as a gentle make up remover. My rosacea doesn't like to be rubbed. Laura Mercier oil free tinted moisturiser wipes off very easily so no need to rub face. I use a muslin cloth. When not working l just wear Jason oil free facial sunscreen. Also an attitude of l don't care what others think is helpful. I actually found that people had empathy for me in a bad break out and some shop assistants were kinder. Take care, this too will pass.

Have you tried using baby shampoo for washing your face? Just a tiny drop will do. It helped with what appeared to be occular rosacea.
I use Azaleic Acid from The Ordinary at night - put it on after you've put on any treatments or moisturiser. I just use Child's Farm unscented moisturiser.
Also IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Redness is a good makeup, only one shade available in the UK though.

Thanks Guys. There is something in the hydrating Cerave that burns my skin. But the Smoothing one doesn’t. But yes maybe it’s too drying. I’ve tried everything Talontedex suggested but I think my skin is more sensitive as all the stuff irritated . I’ve ordered a sample of Lilly lolo .
I’m taking a probiotic and vitamins and HRT patches. I am trying to get answers but no tests revealing anything at the moment. Yes even baby shampoo irritates well Johnson’s baby shampoo. I use the Cerave lotion as this seems a little better than the tub or tube. Not sure what ingredients difference there is. To be honest it does do a good job of hydrating my skin but when I but it on my hands it does make them itch a bit . But it’s the best I’ve found so far. I’ve tried Ren , cetaphil , la roche posay, kalme , Moo Goo, The Ordinary, TBS calming range. Not tried a lot of Eucerin. I use childs farm on my body but can’t on my face.
How do you use the elemis pro collagen cleansing balm ?
