I have had phlegm sitting in the back of my throat for weeks, it's impossible to clear it and occasionally I manage to cough out a bit of really horrible hard strong-tasting stuff. This morning I got a really hard little lump out which was dark brown

I am REALLY scared now, have I got lung cancer?

do you smoke?

not that I know of! Would that cause really hard foul-tasting phlegm that doesn't go away? [hopeful]

Have you been to dr? Could be an allergy as Fio said?

"If you're coughing up yellow, green, or brown phlegm, your body is in the process of fighting an infection. If the color of your phlegm is brown or gray, it may be your body is expelling tars or resins built up from smoking or inhaling large amounts of dust. Regardless of the color of your phlegm, if you're cough it up, you should probably go see a doctor"

found that

i had this green sleeves, only mine was BLACK , turns out i had a sinus infection, what u should do is blow your nose REALLY hard, and see if u get the same sort of coloured stuff out of your nose, any blood etc.

see a doctor greeny but don't worry, I had a grim phlegm-y phase that lasted MONTHS and coughed up all sorts - was convinced I had TB but it cleared up after I was given a ventolin inhaler (don't know if that was related or not really!)

I have nasty lumps of mucousy gunge out of my throat from time to time. Almost like some phlegm or cattarah ahs got caught in a crevice (my tonsils are a bit shot) and combined with paque etc over time. Looked like small ball of chewing gum !

I am full of infection atm and am couighing up brown gunk as well (sorry for TMI!). I have never smoked. I'v had pneumonia twice before though, and I'm waiting for results of chest x-rays done yesterday.

I found when I had this stuff that it would be worse if I'd had red wine the night before - no idea why

I would often cough up LOTS of blood btw but no one could find anything wrong. I WAS living in a damp squat at the time but all the same, it wasn't AWFUL, but the TB-symptoms continued for weeks and weeks until some doctor decided I had asthsma and the inhalers did seem to fix it
