Has anyone else had this awful virus that causes sleeplessness?

It started on Xmas day when I didn't feel right, like a funny tummy that made me feel anxious but I knew it wasn't just anxiety because I know what anxiety feels like and I haven't felt anxious for months if not years.

That was accompanied with pressure on my face, feeling queasy and slightly nauseous. I hardly ate any Xmas lunch and later on in the day I got a huge headache.

I had a horrible night with horrible vivid dreams, and had to sleep propped up in bed. I must have slept 3 hours in total that night. The day after I had pain at the back of my neck (which was probably due to sinusitis) chills and felt chesty and wheezy in the morning and wasn't even able to have a nap in the afternoon to recover.

I went to the doctor's who prescribed ABs for sinusitis and I felt like the symptoms started easing off a bit although I still had no appetite.

But the worst is the nights. I feel like I'm going out of my mind. I slept a total of 1.5 hours last night and still couldn't sleep any later than 7:30. It has now been 7 nights of nearly no sleep and not being able to nap at all. It is now causing me anxiety that it could be something sinister because I am usually such a good sleeper and fall asleep within minutes. It feels like I genuinely am not sleepy (although obviously exhausted) and when I do fall asleep it's fretful and accompanied with bad dreams.
What's going on? Is it possible that a virus brings on sleeplessness like that? I mean it's not even that I'm uncomfortable at night it's just that I can't sleep. I have mentioned this to the doctor who seemed not to care at all and put it down to the sinusitis.
Obviously it has now created a vicious circle because I'm so overtired and anxious about that I cannot sleep.
I'm starting work Monday and I'm freaking out that this is now my new sleeping pattern and I won't be able to function.
I would really appreciate some reassurance of some sort. Sad

Hi there seems to be something awful doing the rounds - a variation on chest / sinus/ flu etc and it's causing some off symptoms. I was chatting to a friend yesterday- we both have had nasty chest infections and we both have had awful sleeplessness. I'm three weeks in so my sleep is better.
I'd suggest really trying not to dwell on it but just still rest at night , shut your eyes don't concentrate on sleeping if you see what I mean . I was having odd symptoms at night - tingly lips , dizzy , as well as chest symptoms.

Hi my 18 month old daughter hardly sleep or eats. I don’t know what to do. I have 2 other children aged 9 and 6. My 6 year old is currently being assessed for autism but I’m finding my 18month old much harder work. Today she’s eaten a few bites of toast and some crisps, she’s been awake for 14 hours on only 8 hours of sleep and is still not giving to go to sleep.
Does anyone have any advice please?

It's probably the temperature fluctuations that are causing sleeplessness. Try 2 paracetamol and a camomile tea. The paracetamol are anti pyrexial so will bring your temp down.

One of the components of flu or cold medicine, phenylephrine, makes me sleepless and is a known side effect of it. Is there any chance you've had that?

@sophz28 you need to start your own thread to ask for advice.

Not to worry Sophz.

Thanks all for your reassurance, I lay down earlier after a lunch that I literally forced down my throat and I fell asleep for an hour and a half! I was so happy because it actually felt like a “normal” sleep as opposed to the freaky sleeps I had had at nights lately. Besides I woke up feeling rested. After that I found that I was profusely sweating and then getting chills again, so I don’t think it’s totally over but I’m sure I’m on the mend.

@girlofthenorth are you ok now? I was getting tingling feet and hands at nights.

@RummidgeGeneral no I didn’t have any meds at all until I started taking the ABs

No big deal Sophz but you will get help on a new thread that you won't get on someone else's!

Sounds like you have an overactive thyroid. I would go back to your doctor and ask for a blood test specifically for your thyroid and see what you levels are. Your symptoms sound like mine before I was diagnosed.

@Princessbanana thanks for your advice, no I don’t think it’s that. I had thyroid tests not long ago and they came back normal. My sister had an overactive thyroid and she couldn’t sleep for months, was constantly sweating and shaking and lost loads of weight. I think it was just a nasty virus for me as my sleep is now back to normal and my sinuses are slowly getting back to normal too.

We have had this in one form or other.

Dd is the only one who is through it.

Ds had his first food yesterday. He has been ill since Christmas Eve.

At one point he scrunched his duvet up and used it as a pillow to prop himself up otherwise he would spend the night coughing.
He couldn’t sleep at all

I thought I was through the worse till it all went down hill on NYE

Dp who hasn’t got a spleen has started coughing.

We are all feeling really bad

@Oliversmumsarmy oh poor you it's awful !
I'm supposed to be back at work on Monday, just don't know how I'm going to manage !!
OP, no not yet better but started feeling out of the worst temps, shaking etc on week three, now week five ! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel but it's slow..
How are people working with this thing ?

I think there are 2 different bugs.

Dd had a much “milder” version.

Ds has had full blown flu. He started going down with it Christmas Eve morning.

He had a high temperature and was shivering with cold.

Yesterday he had soup which he managed to keep down.

He was never nauseous but he coughed so hard trying to free the catarrh from the back of his throat he would throw everything up.

Today he was actually smiling and managed 1/2 a small pizza.

Normally would have polished off a whole one.

He has lost just over a stone in weight.

I thought I had a bad cold and cough. Then NYE started to sweat and shiver.

Not slept properly since then and I have Melatonin to get myself to sleep at night.

Dp is the one we have to look out for as he doesn’t have a spleen and has no defence against illnesses

Oh..I'm quite relieved to read this. I also started off by not being able to sleep, felt completely wired and really sweaty and went off all coffee and sugar as I couldn't cope with the extra stimulation. Then I felt absolutely horrific for a few days until I eventually sweated it out and started to feel better again slowly. What a weird bug!

Woollycardi so weird isn’t it? Glad to hear you’re feeling better though.

I was feeling nauseous and went off my food from Xmas Morning to New Years Eve. So it actually lasted me a week.
A bit gutted about that as I cooked a beautiful Xmas Lunch and had hardly any of it. Same with a beautiful NYE dinner. Funnily enough I wasn’t too bad during the day I still managed to do things like walk the dog etc... but every little thing was exhausting even though I was all “wired up” like you described it so well.

I’ve got to be careful though and not take it for granted that I’m feeling better because after lunch I felt kind of chesty again so I’m taking it easy.

@Oliversmumsarmy it sounds like you guys had/are having a tough time with it I’m sorry to hear. Flowers

I'm not sleeping great. Started with a sore throat, lost voice, runny/blocked nose, chesty cough and it's lingering. Been off work since the 30th dec (it started on the 27th)

@Pincepie123 hope it isn't turning chesty and hope you feel all better soon too... and same to everyone else who feels rough!
