Abscess still there after root canal appointment

I've had root canal on one of my teeth recently. I have an abscess on the gum. My NHS dentist wouldn't do it, so I had to have it done privately. I had the first root canal appointment done just over a week ago. The dentist mentioned that the abscess should go between now and the next appointment. It's still there however after 8 days (although smaller). I'm worried now that it hasn't worked, and I've already spent so much money on it. Does anyone know how long it should take for an abscess to go after the first root canal appointment? I've had a lot of problems with my teeth recently, so its been getting me down, and I'd rather avoid losing the tooth if possible.

When you say first appointment, does that mean you've got the second one to go? My root canal was done in 2 appointments a week apart from each other. It took around a week to 10 days after the second appointment to have recovered.

Yes, I've had the first appointment where he put the temporary dressing down, and I'm due to go back in the middle of January for the second appointment. He did mention that the abscess should go after the first appointment though, although he didn't say how long it should take exactly. Did you have an abscess with yours? I guess I'm just worried that the infection is still there after having the roots cleaned.
