Hi all,
I had major abdominal surgery 11 days ago and I have got an infection in my wound. I saw a dector yesterday and got prescribed antibiotics and the staples are due to be removed on Tuesday
Do you think I should go and have it looked at again tomorrow?
I feel ok in myself, no temperature or anything just miserable and in pain 😭

It doesn't look too bad to me. You should expect some pain and swelling, after all you are held together with Staples at present! The skin immediately next to the Staples is not red so no spreading infection as far as the pictures show. Poor you! Hope your recovery is speedy!

oh dear, that does look painful.

Let the antibiotics kick in. If the pain becomes worse or your temperature increases, then take yourself back to Doctors.

Hopefully it will stop the oozing within the next day or two.

Ouch that looks really sore. Are you putting any cream or anything on it?If you're worried I would see someone as you did have major surgery. Is that by your belly button? Hope it soon heals and becomes more bearable ☺️ x

Thanks everyone for your reply’s
I will see how it feels in the morning
@mummymayhem18
I’m just bathing it with warm water
Yes, that’s my belly button, I’m not sure it’s my original one, I had a complete hysterectomy and a 50 lb ovarian cyst removed so there was a lot of excess skin left!

Blimey op, that’s one hell of an incision. I agree with @mummymayhem18 that if you’re concerned you should go and see someone before Tuesday. You’ve had major surgery, they won’t think you’re wasting their time. The area to the bottom right of the picture does look quite red to me, is it hot to touch?

@TreaterAnita
When the surgeon said it wouldn’t be pretty afterwards they definitely weren’t kidding ☹️
It’s warm to touch rather than hot

My sister in law is a nurse and has looked at it for me, she said just to keep an eye on it for the moment

Order iodine off amazon and start applying it. Won't harm you.

@PearlsBeforeWine , what possessed you to give that advice to someone who has just undergone a massive operation?

How is it now? Looks like irritation from the staples is causing problems too. Hopefully it eases once they're out.

I think it looks ok, I do wound care every day. It will be painful red and swollen but as long as you feel well and the redness isn't tracking away from the wound and there isn't tons of stuff coming out of it, it will be ok. Big old wound though, it must have been a big op.

Thank you for your further replies
It is still oozing puss but isn’t so red and angry looking
@madcatladyforever it was for ovarian cancer
I had both ovaries and tubes, my womb, cervix and appendix removed.
Oh and 3 ovarian cysts, one of which weighed 50 lb....... 😮

Bloody hell, what an epic operation.

I do hope you begin to feel better soon.

Maybe ask a nurse about the iodine (maybe the 3%?) actually. It is good for killing off nasties.

Hi Op you shouldn't need to be bathing it yourself , make an appointment with the practice nurse for a redressing if it's oozing and making the dressing wet. She may be able to apply an alternative dressing to manage the exudate.

Fingers crossed the Abx kick in and you have good news from your follow up.

Get well soon op. Fingers crossed you are cancer free. Xx

I would it looked at again and will at least put your mind at rest. Is there a district nurse that you can call? Xx

50 lbs!!! Did I read properly? And so many organs removed. Poor you.
When in doubt with a case like yours and a diagnosis of ovarian cancer I wouldn’t take any risk and have someone have a look at it. Maybe in addition to oral AB they can give a topical AB cream.
Best wishes for a

I had surgery in March and that went through my belly button. I thought they’d given me someone else’s when the staples me back together but I’ve suddenly realised, it’s mine again!! It feels the same as it used to.
You will heal. This is my wound!
