Toenails falling off with no warning!

Currently in pretty good health; have a healthy diet, apart from the odd sniffle I've had no issues for years. My nails have always been really healthy and strong enough to break nail scissors; I'm on my feet a lot at work so tend to wear flat shoes that don't pinch.

In the last week, two of my toenails have fallen off in the shower with no warning at all (no discolouration, apparent infection or dropping heavy objects on them - they just fell off). It wasn't painful but seems really weird, especially since there seems to be no surrounding infection of any sort. I'm way too lazy to use any nail varnish on them and have no idea what might be causing it.

Is it worth seeing a podiatrist or GP about this? I always really hate to bother the doctor (inherited bias I think) unless I absolutely have to, but this seems really peculiar and I have no idea what might be causing it.

Could you maybe have had hand foot mouth disease somewhere in the last few months? That could explain them just falling off without trauma or infection.

This happened to me last year like 4 in a month straight off. I never found out why but all nails are intact now Grin

I had a few fall off! Was quite worrying but nothing untoward happened. All grown back now although my big toenail never grows straight now

I had this! Then it happened again but under each one that fell off was another nail underneath. Glad I'm not Theo my one!

Worth seeing your GP. Problems with your lungs and / or circulation can cause nail issues.

When I first read the title I thought it said tonsils. That was a thought I didn't want to have.

Eek - that would be grim!
I don't run nearly as much as I used to so doubt it's anything to do with that. Might see if I can get a phone appointment with my GP to discuss.
Thanks everyone.

My big toe nails fall off, grow and fall off again. Podiatrist says it’s due to running in my younger days!! Ruined the nail bed
