What helps you?! I'm going to the dentist next week and I'm using sensodyne but hold and really cold things make me yelp.

The sensodyne rapid repair is much better for me, smear it on and leave it and also brush with it too

Yup, I second the above method of smearing it on and letting it sink in. I noticed a difference after a few days. I think it needed to build up or something inside my teeth.

Try Colgate Pro-Relief/Sensitive. It's a bit more palatable than Sensodyne. Apply like a cream before bed as previous posters have mentioned.

I had tried the Colgate sensitive stuff, as @usernom123123 suggests as I thought it tasted better but it didn’t work for me at all! I returned to sensidyne, problem solved (apart from it’s not as fresh as Colgate) So if sensodyne works for me and not you, and Colgate doesn’t work for me then it follows it may well work for you! Sounds like it’s worth a try. My dentist was dishing out free samples of the stuff last time I was in, shame it didn’t suit my tooth problems after all!

Colgate pro-relief - fantastic stuff

The dentist recommended rapid relief but also told me off for brushing in an up and down motion. I thought everyone did this?! Apparently should be a circular motion. I've bought a sensodyne toothbrush too.

It should be a circular motion. If you google "modified bass technique" that will show you the correct technique.
Regarding toothbrushes, the new Oral B 2000 has a pressure indicator that bleeps when you press too hard.
If your sensitivity persists, there is a toothpaste your dentist can prescribe: Duraphat 5000.

I have acid erosion hmm I'm 32!! I'll alternate between pronamel and rapid relief when painful I think.

And now the love has spread to other teeth. One in particular is regular bouts of sharp pain not even when eating or drinking. Apparently I have exposed roots.
